So I have an interview at a hospital next Friday for a volunteer position (yes, they interview for their volunteer positions). Now, job interviews are easy. Navy or charcoal suit, plain or subtle pinstripes, white or chambray-blue shirt, conservative tie. Am I looking at the same thing for this? Or is it more of a khakis-and-a-polo thing? Shirt, tie, and slacks, but leave the jacket at home?

ETA: It's kind of a general, layperson volunteer thing, not a certified or highly-skilled position or the like.

I'd wear khakis and a polo. If I've got to put on a tie there better be a $100 a plate dinner somewhere in the mix or someone needs to have died.

If it ain't a paying job I show up in shorts and a tee shirt. I don't like the idea of being grilled for volunteer work.

Lots of times people use volunteer work to either gain some type of experience or to open other doors to something that they're really working towards. Plus it's prudent in some situations to not show up looking like the lowest common denominator if it's something that you're actually interested in.

Do you want the position?

Wear a suit.

You can always take the tie and the jacket off.

I've never felt overdressed in my life...I cannot however state the opposite.

khakis and polo.  i'm not gonna wear-out my suit on volunteering.  i find it uppity that they have a formal interview.

Business casual. Slacks and a polo

Dress as if going to a paying job interview for the same type of work.

Yeah it's not like a hospital would care who is wandering around patients and their familes with wallets and purses getting left around.  Aren't any drugs in hospitals either.  The noive of dem wanting to check out volunteers.

I agree with macro's advice.

It's pretty easy to slip off a jacket and unknot or remove your tie.

What would you wear while doing the job?

Whatever it is, dress better than that.

If you'll be wearing khakis and a polo, interview in a dress shirt and slacks (and maybe a jacket).
If you'll be wearing a dress shirt and slacks, interview in a suit.

Unless you're working fast food, I wouldn't go anything lower than a dress shirt and slacks.

A suit for an interview is never inappropriate.

Yeah people in suits are always honest.

No, but a conman in a suit will be much more successful than one wearing a wifebeater, cut off jean shorts and flip flops.

Right or wrong, the first thing people see and judge you by are your clothes.  Why handicap yourself by having to overcome an inappropriate appearance?

Exactly.  Some people see being over dressed as a negative too.

I was afraid that the most sensible suggestions would be a suit My one suit that fits' trousers have a bigass tear in the knee where I tripped last time I wore it. Well, I guess I'd better try and find a new set of trousers that very closely resemble the dye job for now

Beggars can't be choosers.

If I was volunteering my services, I would wear whatever I would be expected to wear while doing the job.

If they don't want my help, I'm not out anything.

Most people are smart enough to know what is appropriate wear when you are going to be working in a certain setting, and overdressing a little is ALWAYS better than under-dressing.  Next time you are in a hospital look at what the workers are wearing, NOT the folks who wandered away from the ER.

Till your kid gets molested by Chester at the hospital.

Background checks and interviews are a good thing.
