my nephew called a couple weeks ago and asked if id been to his home. Me: "No, why ?"

he said he left the house, both doors were locked. new doors, no one else has keys to them, anyone who would was in Florida.

when he came home, he put his motorcycle in the back yard. he said it didnt look like the front door was open. parks the motorcycle, turns around, the back door is open.

he clears the house top to bottom... checks behind everything.  NO ONE IN THE HOUSE. no marks on the door or anything to show that someone forced entry.

he and his g/f are 100% sure both doors were locked.

that night they go locked both doors and go to sleep. he wakes up about 4-5 am and goes upstairs, the front door is WIDE open again.

aside from calling Ghost Busters, the only thing i can think of is the person went to run out the back door and saw them in the back yard and bolted out the front door, leaving his accomplice in the house and somehow, the other intruder hid in the house and wasnt found during the search, BUT HAD TO STAY HIDDEN ALL EVENING AND NIGHT UNTIL THEY FELL ASLEEP TO SNEAK OUT !

thatll teach him !

ETA- what makes it really odd is there was a small amount of cash on the dresser, he has a ton of radio / playstation shit and nothing was missing... but my only thought is if someone broke in, they got there before anyone could steal anything and spooked them.

That's an interesting story from both points of view.  If there was someone in the house and your nephew missed him during the sweep, that's bad.  It means that they could have been taken by surprise as they slept.  Not good especially if his girlfriend stays there by herself.  I highly recommend a floor bolt by the door (one of those things where the bolt mounted on the door is set into the floor)  that should make it harder to kick in the door.  Second he should do a detailed sweep of the house to find the nooks and cranies that someone could hide in.  Third I would highly recommend that he harden at least on of the rooms as a safe room, usually the bed room.  Having some scum invading your home screws with your mind .

However if it is a ghost or poltergeist then that too is an interesting story and can be quite an adventure:)

Just throwing this out there. If they are new doors mabe the latch and plunger are not alligned properly with the strike plate.

very very true-

i lived in that house growing up-

i can tell ya- if someone hid in the house, they are Houdini X 10 because there is NO decent hiding spots... so the person must have been small and VERY uncomfortable

he says he checked the doors afterwards, they are very secure... cant push the bolt with a screw driver, cant force it open, etc....   he installed them himself, so no "door experts" have a spare key from the job....

understood, i just wonder how that would go without the neighbors seeing it.... then again, shit like that goes unseen daily
