Yes, the title says it all.  I was fishing today and we hooked a few Makos, Tigers, and Sand Sharks around North Jersey/ New York City way off shore.  We got them to the side of the boat and I wondered, what would be a good round to use to dispatch a shark.  So what would you choose to take out a shark?  Mind you, you're up close and along side a boat with a pissed off shark thrashing in the water.

I'm not advocating the death of sharks, shooting near water, close proximity to people and property.

I didn't know Jersey had Tigers? I fished in Jersey salt water for 26 years and never heard of it. I only heard of Great Whites like twice. Makos and Threshers mostly.

Confused If you are posting in reply to my post. I know this story, EVERY Jersey person knows this story. When I said I heard of two Great White stories, this was 1 of the 2.

Additonally, it is now pretty widely agreed that it was probably NOT a great white, much more likely to have been a bull shark that far up the creek.

This.

Although, I'd encourage you to release as many of them as you can.

Simply cut the leader, the hook will rust out in a few days.

Not widely agreed; widely speculated.

Just as the pinning it on a great white is speculation, right?

My memory is a bit fuzzy on who said it, either Elmer Keith or Jeff Cooper.  But I believe one of them used a .44 Magnum.  Aim point was just forward and below the front of the upper fin.  One shot would take them out.

My friend used one (bang stick) on his boat in Hawaii.   He said that .38 Special rounds were usually enough.

I offered to use my Garand but, he was worried that I'd shoot his deck.  LOL.
