I have a Winchester 1897 (Solid frame) made in 1908 that I want to turn into a trench gun, I have 2 options,

1. Have the Barrel cut-down to riot length and buy a the heatshield/bayonet mount

2. Buy a riot barrel and buy a heatshield/bayonet mount,

Obviously 2 will be more expensive, which is why I looked into 1, and buying a original is out of my price range. Note that I do not care about the resell value of the shotgun, I intend on shooting it and keeping it until I pass. Just want to get an idea of what I should do,

I hope this is right for GD,

How much do the Norinco clones run?

Were it me, and purchasing a new firearm was completely out of the question, I'd opt for #2.  Reason being that I could still return the shotgun to its original configuration if I felt the need to.

Get a new barrel.

For any barrel cutting work, I suggest GunCat

New barrel. Good on you for keeping it a shooter, but keep the original bits original.

I would save my $, and buy a new barrel.  Keeping the origional might hurt in the short term, but that extra $120 isn't worth loosing the ability to put the shotgun back to it's original state if you wanted to.

It may not seem like it is important now, but trust me, it will be in the future.

The 1908, assuming condition, may have actual worth to any number of collectors. As any reputable smith will tell you, some firearms should not be worked up. I would see what I could get for the thing - assuming condition. You might be suprised. The 50's are getting on in price these days, even. A ssale towards a late model may net you more than the whole of your project.

That said, #2 is the way to go, assuming condition.
