So the other night a power surge defied my surge protector and fried my dvd player. It was a long time coming, but finally, it is gone. I've had a PS2 forever but I'm ready to move up to the PS3, but I'd liek to get one of the backwards compatible models. Problem is, they're refurbed and cost around $30 more than a brand new one (albeit a non B/C version.)
Is there any way one can get a new PS3 to read old games? I have a small collection and would like to keep them. OR, is the PS3 so badass that I will forget about my crappy old outdated PS2 games and live happily ever after? (BTW, before it can start, I'm pretty sold on the PS platform. The kind of casual gamer I am, the kinds of games I tend to like, and the tons of crap I DON'T need the system to be have me set.) Thanks |

Get a refurbed and enjoy. I have a first gen that has been turned off three times since system launch. (I'm not including software updates that made me restart.) It has never had even a hiccup. When the system first came out, they ran one inside an ezbake oven for a while just to toss internet poo at the RROD 360. Way too many games on the ps2 not to get backwards compatible. I think I have played more ps2 games on the ps3 than ps3 games. ***For multiplatform, I tend to play 360 because of the controller shape. |

I have an older PS3 that is backwards compatible and in my sons room he has a PS2 he is 6.
I never play his PS2 and I maybe 3 times have used the PS3 to play PS2 games. Most likely you will not want to play your PS2 games after you get a taste of the graphics on the PS3. Spend the money if you want but for 30 bucks and used you could just get a new PS3 and a used PS2 if you must. |

Just get the PS3 and keep your PS2.
PS3's are usually set up HDMI, PS2's usually set up component, so it's not like you have to pull one out for the other. Get a $20 wireless controller for it, while you're at it. And you'll still save money over a "kinda" backward compatible PS3. (That being said, you should be fine with a refurb PS3 if you want to save money over a new one.) |

The 80 gig out now is backwards compatible... the 40gig is not, the older 60 gigs were also backwards compatible too, but those are not around anymore Wikipedia has a chart of features on their PS3 page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3 It indicates that the current production models do not have backwards compatibility. |

The newer 80's and the old 80's are different. I doubt anyone still has the old 80's in stock. The 20 gig was the only 100% truely bc model it had the chip in it, the others used software and weren't 100% BC some games wont run on them. Not worth the price IMO the 20 gig refurbs sell for then on top of that you'd need to spend another $50 for a bigger HD. |

Right now, at this very minute, the shop nearby has 2x 60gig refurbed BCs for 429 and brand new nonBC 80gigs for 399.
I'm leaning towards the new one, not so much for the savings of $30, but just because. I still have my PS2, so the games don't have to be sold or tossed. And I could theoretically have both hooked up at the same time. I just don't care that much. I'd like to have one system, play my FPS games and GTAs when I have free time and thats it. The rest of the time its a Bluray player. And something in me wants a new one instead of a refurbed model. They have a warranty and blah blah blah. But thats just me... |

That 399 one sounds fine, then. Note that the extra disk space doesn't really offer any advantage that I've found, unless you intend to use it as a media center for downloaded movies and stuff. |
