Food for thought in an age where people are living paycheck to paycheck and\or are worried about employment:

Got a financial 'bug out bag' for job loss or extended leave?  Please describe your preparations and recommendations.

Should you have gold on hand?

SHTF forum will give you better answers than GD.  Generally, you should have several hundred in cash on hand, in small (<= 20) bills.  If you have a rent or mortgage, it wouldn't hurt to have enough to cover that, as well, just in case your accounts get screwed up for a short time.  1000 is probably too much to keep on hand, though.

As to gold, I don't see the point, but some people like to have it around.

One of the opinions you'll hear a lot is that you can't eat, shoot, wear, or live in gold, and so its "oh shit" worth is somewhat overstated.

One thing I've found useful, while on this subject, is to tuck a hundred or so into various spots in my wallet and key case other than the main cash section.  That way, if I forget my wallet, I still have money.  And, if I have my wallet but spend my last cash, and somebody won't or can't take credit or debit, I'm not up a creek without a paddle.

By the same logic, I keep a hundred tucked away somewhere in my truck.
