Nice looking rifle and accruements. Looks like a Russian capture with shellac finish.  Any X marks on it or are the shitbirds still there?  Where did you get it?

The round one?  To disassemble the bolt.  You can press the firing pin in the hole to compress and relieve the firing spring tension to take the bolt apart.

What is the marking on the receiver? Should be something like 237, duv, byf, or some other 3 character code.

Hmmmmm....thought one other use was to secure them in a rack in the armory.

Nope, it is the bolt take down disc.

It is a bolt take down tool and is used to relieve the tension in the firing pin spring for disassembly of the bolt.

i have a '41 BNZ all markings intact, great condition and i didnt pay close to half that price

That is a bit much for a shellac'd Russian capture.  I paid $400 for one that had it's POS finish removed and came with 100 rounds of ammo and a nice bayonet w/frog.

I'd keep looking around.

I agree, a bit high, no, way too high. You should still be able to buy a M48 for half that.

you can get all this for $399 and keep $100 for ammo, instead of paying that guy $100 for a case. http://www.mauser.org/specials/stimulus2009.htm

Get a copy of The Gun Digest book of firearms disassembly/assembly PartIV or any similar book and it will show you how to do the take down with out destroying the bolt.

Too high - this is a BYF (Mauser mfg) 1944 WWII bring back. Great shooter, frighteningly accurate. Original sling. Matching all the way down to the screws.

i never bought anything from them.  i just saw the add in one of the NRA mags and posted it to show that you can get the same rifle for less.

Extremely overpriced guns that have been refinished, remarked and otherwise fucked with.

Everybody here says that they are frauds and crooks, advertising post-war Mausers as Nazi guns

Nice rifle, but, that's an M48, not a 98K.  I have about 8 or 10 of them, nice accurate rifles, built like a brick shit house too.

That looks like a Yugo M-48 A/B/BO, I have a BO, paid $220.00 for it shipped.

To the OP, that rifle looks like a Russian captured K98, sellers sometimes use the term "arsenal refinished" in regards to RC K-98's because it "sounds better". It's not necessarily a bad thing as that is typically all that's left these days.

Now, ask the seller the following:
1) Are the waffenkamps and swastika's still there or have they been peened/defaced?
2) What does the bore look like? Clean or sewer pipe? Lands look ok or pitted?
3) Has he head space checked the bolt? Did it go or no-go?

deduct $ from the price based on his answers.

Looks like a mismatch Russian-capture, with repro sling, Yugo cartridge pouch ($3), West German G3 cleaning kit ($10), no sight hood.

Totally avoid the Mitchell's Mausers hype.  All that $300 worth of accessories is more like $30 of surplus junk non-related to a WWII German 98k.

[#27]
$499 for a Russian Capture K98k, a $10 cleaning kit, a $10 repro sling, a $10 mag pouch, and a $15 rifle case?

Seems a bit high.

I think you can still find, if you look, sub-$300 RC K98k rifles.  There's a boatload on gunbroker right now starting at $250 or so.  IF you want to pay for accessories that aren't period and are easily obtainable later, then go for the $500 RC, but I'd rather pick the rifle up cheaply and then source the inexpensive accessories or seek out actual vintage items.]

YMMV

Id keep looking. I have one of those gun cases, it survived one trip in the mail, inside a box.

Way too high unless it has all matching numbers or some special history.

+1 to the way too high for a Russian capture. I have one , It's an excellent rifle, but its all mismatched

$250 would be all I would pay for that.

Oh, and to add something:

Anyone who buys from the shysters at Mitchell's Mausers has more money than sense, doesn't care about originality, correctness and collectibility, or both.

Firstly, Mitchell's pricing is outrageous.  When AIM and other vendors wereselling M-48's for less than $100, Mitchells was hawking their wares in magazine ads for $300-$500 for the same guns, except Mitchells came up with an "interesting" history for them.

Mitchell's is intentionally deceptive in their ads.  They, for instance, claimed for several years that the M-49a's that they sold were from a lost cache of Nazi guns found in Yugoslavia.  Never mind that the M-48 wasn't built until years after the war.

Mitchell's is also famous for refinishing guns, renumbering parts, etc.  Most collectors who want guns in original condition, don't consider Mitchell's guns legitmately collectible.

Some don't care and just want a "pretty gun", but if you want the gun to retain it's value, do with one that still has it's original finish.

Friends don't let friends buy from Mitchell's Mausers.

YMMV

You'd probably be quite happy with a Yugoslavian M48 Mauser.  I have one, and it's a wonderful rifle.  Accurate as hell.  Smooth action.  While it shoots the same powerful 8mm/7.92mm cartridge as its larger brothers, the recoil isn't that bad.  It also has a decent trigger for a milsurp rifle.

Mine was in perfect shape, appearing to have been put in storage shortly after manufacture, possibly never fired until me and my brother got our hands on it.

You can get an M48 for around $200, complete with bayonet, bayonet sheath and belt loop, ammo pouch, sling, and cleaning kit, if the accessories matter to you.  They're usually easier to find that K98's.

Get an M48, and use the savings to buy yourself some surplus 8mm ammo.
