I don't know how widespread Killdeer are in the US, but I'm sure everyone in the Midwest has seen them run across gravel roads.

I've never seen them display a decoy behavior when you get close to their young.
This one made a huge racket and acted injured in my back yard.

All I wanted was to take a few pictures of their 4 chicks.

Nice pictures, although I was hoping for the other variety of chicks.

Nice pics.  I have them around my house and I've seen them do the broken wing thing around their nests.  It's an interesting behavior.

Why do they bob their head up and down so much.  That makes me laugh.

They look awfully small. How on earth do they manage to kill deer? What are they like airborne piranha?

Kildeer are everywhere near my home.  The decoy behavior is common when near their nests or young.

They nest in our rail yard. Neat to see the mother pretend to be hurt and lure you away from the nest.

I scared the crap out of a mother grouse with chicks last week, she pulled the wounded stunt too.  Great photos.
