My wife got an e-mail from my sister from facebook. My sister's account was apparently comprimised and when my wife opened the e-mail it locked up her computer... she said that she accidently turned off Kaspersky while trying to close out the "harmful" e-mail. When she did this the damage was done. She received a Trojan Horse / Worm... etc and it screwed her computer all up.
She contacted Kaspesky about what to do and they basically said to upload the new 2009 version and run it. She did, and as long as Kaspersky is on she can't use the internet. As soon as she turns off Kaspersky she is able to use the internet and everything works great, but she doesn't have any protection in place then. So she talked to the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy today to find out what she needs to do and they told her to bring it in... that it will cost $200 for them to look at it and clean it, and if they find anything broken we will have to pay for that too. What say ye ARFcom internetz guru's? What can we do to fix this? - Clint |
| I've used this program on systems at work in the past, and it seems to work where Kaspersky sometimes fails. Give it a try. There should be a free trial download that will work for 30 days or something. |

If you were closer I'd do it for $50 and dinner. what do you mean "can't use the internet."? I wish I had some more air miles... how do you feel about moose steaks?
Kaspesky apparently won't allow her to log onto the internet. As in, if Kaspesky is "on" she can click on internet explorer but it won't come up.... (edited to clarify it shows the "cannot display webpage" screen) - Clint |

Whatever you do, do NOT take it to Geek Squad. It's hard to say exactly what to do without actually being at the machine, but the easiest and most effective way is to reformat the hard drive.
Sidenote - Try and use more discretion in opening emails and visiting certain websites. I have not had any sort of anti virus program on my computers in the last 9 years and the only time I got a virus is when my buddy gave me a program that he downloaded off the internet. Trusted him, but shouldn't have. |

Fuck the "geek squad". I went there looking at a computer, and one of them asked me if I had any questions. I asked them if I could see the specs on the computer, and she points to the little yellow tag and says "there are the specs right there."
I replied "No, I mean the REAL specs. Which processor does it have? How may expansion slots does it have, and how many are there? What kind of RAM does it have? You know...the specs." I got a blank stare in return. The "geek squad" people are computer techs like I'm an astronaut. |

here is your prescription:
MALWAREBYTES can be found here and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if it doesnt work at first, try running in "SAFE MODE with networking to update malwarebytes". (press f8 upon startup) If it was me, I would just reinstall windows after copying the roaming profile. |

I just tried it and this is the message that I just got: No active malicious files were found and no changes were made - Clint |

I'd run this in safe mode, too. |
