Does anyone have any experience with the Microtech knives I am looking at buying a Ultratech. I know there is a knife forum but I thought I would get better feed back here.

I like mine, but it is not suited very well for EDC as it seems to attract too much lint/crud to be 100% reliable.

first time I heard about em was a couple years back on 24 when Jack Bauer knifed some dude in his limo with one

Dont pay any more than $300 for it.

Microtech makes the best OTF's on the market, but their quality control is spotty and their customer service and warranty sucks ass.

I have had a UT-6 for a few years and fired it 1000's of times and it hasn't misfired once.

I have a UTX-70 ––basically the mini-ultratech–– and it's the balls. I carried it everyday in a suit and it's light enough that it doesn't drag your trousers down by the pocket. The spring is nice and strong and the button takes a firm enough push that I never worried about it firing in my pocket by accident.

They are GREAT auto knives... that being said if I could do it over I would just buy a high quality folder.

i HIGHLY recomend the HALO III. single action out the front. light trigger button. SOLID lock up. all microtech knives are expertly made. If you by it you'll love it.

They are nice, and i have one, but they dont come with pocket clips so you can only carry it on a belt sheath, and you cant close them one handed.

I have had two, both broke within 12 months of buying them new. microtech took one back but refused to fix or return it to me as I was not a LEO. or military, only fire/EMS. Buy from a company that doesn't hate fire/EMS and civilians and that don't break from light use.

The only worry for me is the warranty. I am just a civilian buying one and I am not to sure if they would cover mine under warranty. Could anyone recommend a high quality folder as well?

Good folder?  Can't get much better than a Spyderco Endura, and they're reasonably priced as well.

Benchmade.

I also like Boker knives, I had a Boker Turbine for a while, but lost it

It was a liner lock though....

My friend has a Presidio Axis folder, and its an awesome knife.

For the life of me what I can't understand what the purpose of these OTF knives are for other than looking cool. I can open my folders with thumb studs just as quickly as these OTFs. If you want even faster and stronger get a fixed blade for a fraction of the cost.

Try doing it while fighting someone off of you.  Fixed is fine if you don't carry it in your pocket or belt on a clip.

I've done enough force on force work to know I want nothing less than a fixed blade in a kydex sheath attached securely to a belt or a vest during a fight. I don't need to adjust my grip to access the thumb stud or button. Grab yank and shank.

Well then I am glad you are not in any position to dictate what people should or shouldn't have or want.

Personally I like Dalton automatics.

So have I, and if you have then you'd know for the life of you why an automatic would be preferred over a folder.  As both of us have said, fixed is fine and is preferable as you mentioned for its simplicity.  Most folks however, if they're wearing casual clothing like shorts and flip flops would be much better off with a much more concealable piece, hence the reason for folders and automatics.  I carry a boot knife at work every day as well as an automatic in my pocket.  Outside of work I wear Nikes and jeans, guess which knife I have?

I have had the most problems accessing ANY tool whether it be a handgun in a pocket holster, a knife carried in front pocket or a reload in a pocket holder during grappling and hand to hand fighting. Cause first I have to fish for the object in my pocket, then most likely re orient the weapon in the right direction, and then open the blade/push the button.

MIcrotech are beautiful knives by the way.

Nope, you'll be shit out of luck. Microtech doesn't think little peons like you should own one.

Edited to add: Unless you meant civilian law enforcement, then yes.

Are they actually illegal to just own, I'm not talking carrying them?

Depends I guess.  I've read on blade forums that some had no problems while others didn't hear back at all.  Microtechs are nice, but if you're going to be playing with it and using it quite a bit my suggestion would be to look elsewhere.  Spyderco and Emerson both make a "wave" model non auto folder that makes them quite fast at getting open.  Benchmade as well as Spyderco both make auto's that are highly looked upon as well.  SOG makes auto as well but some have reported them to be a bit temperamental and their prices for them reflect.  If you can do yourself a favor and try and find a now out of business company Camillus Blaze.  They aren't automatics but have what is a "robo assist" opening mechanism, one push on the stud it comes out as fast if not faster than most auto's I've come across, my Blaze is my favorite knife, and they're cheap too!

It depends on the state.

Some states like Arizona they are legal to own and carry. Other states they are only legal to own and not carry, while others states have a overall ban.

Federal law only applies to trasportation over state lines. You are only supposed to ship them over state lines to LEO/MIL

No one really gives a shit though, auto knives are not on the top of the .govs hit list.

Incorrect, federal law dictiates that they cant ship autos accross state lines to non LEO/.MIL

Thats like gettting mad at colt for not servicing your unregistered full auto AR-15.

There are however plenty of dealers that you can send your microtech to and they will deal with the factory for you.
