[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Dead Hard Drive

I have a friend that has a dead hard drive. It won't boot XP Pro and when installed on another box it is asking to format and saying the file system is RAW. Knoppix won't load on the other computer either, but I want to make sure the disk was burned correctly. Any ideas on what is up with this?

ETA: I am not physically at the computer, that's why I am looking for any ideas.

Hard drive crashed. Hope you can recover info.

As to knoppix not loading, anything specific it comes up with?

You could try SPINRITE if there's a lot of important info on it. Otherwise, "Darik's Boot & Nuke" to erase it bit for bit.
