http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/05/cache-of-ammunition-explodes-in-reseda-blaze.html 10:46 AM | May 31, 2009 A metal container apparently used to store ammunition and two sheds caught fire this morning in Reseda, causing an explosion and forcing the evacuations of nearby homes, authorities said. The fire began in the 19200 block of Ingomar Street at 8:43 a.m. Crews tried to douse the flames from about 50 feet away because rounds of ammunition were continuing to go off, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman D’Lisa Davies. Davies said that, according to arriving firefighters, it “sounded like thousands of rounds were going off.” Davies said there were no injuries reported but that about five nearby homes were evacuated. She said the metal container and two sheds were a short distance from a single-family home and that the owner was on the scene and cooperating with authorities. Davies said firefighters were unsure whether ammunition was stored only in the metal container and not in the sheds as well. A police department bomb squad was expected to arrive on scene and to decide when it was safe for residents to return to their homes. Authorities said it appeared that the owner of the residence and the outbuildings had the proper permits and is not expected to be arrested. The police and fire departments are continuing to investigate. |

I really hope the shirtless guy in the pic is not the owner. "Hey I'm the center of attention for a possible nationwide story! How can I look most uneducated while representing a group of people that share in the same hobby as myself!?!"
That would do "great things" for the image of gun owners.

| Assuming there was ammo inside, notice (as the reporters will not) that there was no big explosion like in the movies, no mushroom cloud. When ammunition burns, it pops. The bullet stays pretty much in place, and the case ruptures. When there is a lot of ammunition, it sounds like popcorn. Notice (as the reporters will not) that nobody was injured, and the nearby house was not damaged. |

Translate for the other people. Shed with ammo was going off and something inside the shed went bang once in awhile. Kali has no idea what ammo burning does because they never had any before that heated up so they didnt know what to do. Translated to what? gibberish?

I know it is not dangerous (ammo cooking off) but lots of people freak out about it. I am guessing most NYers would too. |

Wow, you need permits for ammo in Kali? I'm sure they were talking about the sheds. You need permits to build shit on your property in most cases. If the man has to bring the bomb squat to a fire at your place, you can bet he's going to be looking for some way to make you pay. |

Exploding ammo is a myth. SAAMI.Org
Don't watch this if you can't bear ammo being shot at, burned or crushed by a bulldozer.

This raises some very good questions.
What's the proper way to store ammo?? I have mine in my gun locker but it's not fire proof. If my house ever is on fire I'm guessing after I tell them about the ammo they'll pull back and let it burn to the ground. Is this something I should discuss with the local fire department or is that inviting the man in my life?? Oh and I'm not a newbie to ARFCOM. My other screen name couldn't be changed and I was concerned about having some info in it so I signed up for a new account. |
