so i pulled up behind a car at a light earlier today, an average looking light blue sedan (Mercury i think). It only had one bumper sticker and that was an american flag. my problem was that the flag was presented upside-down. this really made my blood boil for some reason so i flipped the person the bird and mentioned some profanity. my gf then got mad and hit me (not hard- like a girl does).
so, should i respect their views or am i right that disrespecting the flag is an abomination? i know there may be some (even on here) who would support this display. they would claim they have a freedom to do so, but then so do I. others might even feel this way due to the election of BO, but that flag represents this nation, not the lowest common denominator who managed to manipulate the masses. |

He has every right to fly the flag that way on his car, you in turn have every right to be offended and flip him off. In short freedom of speech works both ways, and you are both right. |

I have 2 answers based on the following situations...
Answer 1) You were having an argument with your GF and came to ARFCOM to settle it. Yes, you were right and she was wrong to get upset and hit you (The Bros before Hoes answer) Answer 2) You had this discussion in your car with your GF and came to ARFCOM to see if your reaction was correct for future situations. No, the person could be very similar to you politically and he now thinks you're some retarded lib douchebag. Hanging the flag upside down is not disrespectful if the country really is in distress. I think our current situation qualifies. |

I have a U.S. Flag on a pole outside my house, properly lit so I can fly it 24/7. I briefly considered flying it upside down right after the election result became apparent, but decided it best to keep my mouth shut at that point and take a wait and see stance.
Incidentally, The correct spelling is Sammich |

If you don't think the Country is in distress, you are not paying attention. I feel this way. I agree about the distress, however I still think respect for the flag stands, and people should not be flipping it for no real reason. I don't think the OP was wrong. |

Quoted: ... so, should i respect their views... You most certainly do not have to respect their views... but IMHO you have to respect their right to have and express their views, even (especially???) when they differ from yours. (Doesn't mean you have to like or agree with their view, of course. That right is one of the things that makes this nation great. JMHO, YMMV. |

My brother kicked another parent's ass in the elementary school hallway. Not got a good grip on self-control, that one, but it worked out OK for him. The shit-stain had it coming, anyway. Quoted:
I have an American Flag tatooed on my arm. If i was standing on my head would you get all huffy and puffy about it? Then it would only be sideways. Now if you raise your arm over your head it will be upside down. |
I remember back in October - and again in January - several posters here who advocated the same act with a fabric flag. Of course, there's an idiot in our town who was flying the flag upside down until January, at which point it somehow wound up upright again. Assumably it was an anti-Bush statement, the shallowness of the act pretty much negates any signifigance to conservatives/believers in freedom doing it now IMO. Of course, Mr. Liberty Liberal ould have been making a more impressive statement if the flag had been properly lit at night and not ratted out by the weather. |

We had a lot going for us. All the hard work and sacrifice that was put forth to make this country into something great was wasted... There is nothing left. More than half the population proudly voted for a racist Marxist... This country wants socialism... This country wants totalitarianism. Why would I be proud of that? Why would I support that? It has always been easy to say "I love my country, but hate my government"... But what is a country, if not the people that live in it? Your country is gone... quit clinging to it. |

flying the flag upside down is the same as calling 9-1-1 it means you need immediate assistance, right-the-fuck-now! People who display the flag upside down as a symbolic gesture are in effect "crying wolf" or submitting a false alarm. THE FLAG CODE Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10 As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress Approved July 7, 1976 § 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor. (a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. eta: you should have used the jaws of life to extract him from his vehicle, then explained his erroneous display. It is not his right to display the flag as he sees fit. Please, see (a) above. 2nd edit: Since it was a "sticker" and not an actual flag, I will concede that it is his right to "stick it" however he wants. However, the improper display lessens the true meaning of the inverted flag as a notice of distress. Again, it does not mean "the country is in peril". It means you require immediate assistance. In the case of a person who actually needs assistance and has a flag as his only means of signaling, due to repeated misuse, the plea for help will probably be ignored. |

Please, see (a) above. exactly my understanding. yes i do understand (and noted) that many, even on here, think the country is under attack. however, that does not forgive displaying the flag in such a manner. there is a difference because you are using the flag to make a political statement. there is no immediate danger just like under bush when liberals fly it or when the anarchist liberals patch it on their vests. obviously there is a reason, but it is not yet here. there are plenty of other stickers or symbols which can be used to display your dissatisfaction with the state of this country, all without disgracing the American flag |

US Flag flown upside down is an INTERNATIONAL SIGN OF DISTRESS. If you don't think that this Country is in immediate distress, you need to OPEN YOUR EYES. I have a US Flag on my toolbox that is inverted. It will remain as such, most likely indefinitely at the rate this country is going. Edit - spelling |

As a general rule, I think it's foolish to fuck with strangers for no good reason. That kind of shit has a way of biting you in the ass. YMMV. +1 The guy has no reason why some dude just flipped him off. Then pumps the driver and GF full of lead after a roadrage dump. |
| I saw a bumper sticker today that said "Republican Tax Scheme, tax the poor to feed the rich." Are people really that stupid that they don't know the poor don't pay taxes and the rich pay most of the taxes to feed the bottom feeding poor? I wanted to push the car off the road but restrained myself. |

Most people by and large who display flags upside down don't really do it for reasons people like us would do it, they do it because they don't like America, anarchists and teenagers and the like, not because we are in a time of distress.
I bet the dude you flipped off was one of the people who said they'd move to Canada if Bush was re-elected last time, and he put the sticker on in "Protest" or some crap. |
| For every action there is reaction. This poor guy is probably having a bad day now because of what you did. If you felt so passionate of your feelings for the flag are so strong why not calmly follow him to his destination and ask him why his flag is upside down. Be a man about it, not act like a spoiled kid. Lemme guess you were in a hurry the GF needs/wants something and you don't have the time, but flipping him off was the easy way out. |

You were definitely wrong. I of course imagine you carry all of the time? Were you armed when tried to instigate a fight? If so FAIL!!!!! I wouldn't fly the flag upside down, but I can see why others would. I will never fly the flag upside down or treat it disrespectfully but I see the day coming when I will take it down, fold it correct and with great sadness place it high on a shelf and raise another flag in its place. |

I sure as hell hope you stuck her ass back in the cage when you got home?
