| I am looking at buying a hand held GPS for hunting, hiking, fishing and maybe some geocaching. I have used my brothers a little, a Etrx legend hcx, my dad has the vista hcx and he claims it is better. So how important is the electronic compass on the vista, is it worth the $20 more in price?. Also what effect does it have on battery life. Is the 60 csx worth the extra $100? Any help welcome. |

I have the Magellan Explorist 400 and have used it here in the U.S. in training and hunting, and used it in Iraq and Kuwait. The electronic compass works well, and the thing I used the most when running map courses and training. Mine is able to show the MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) and can be read in any of the other systems as well. It can be plugged into my laptop and used with it for a great system with Microsoft Streets and Trips. Shows the vehicle movement live on the screen.
It can be configured many differnet ways. Locations can be marked and kept in the memory and referred to at any time. Anytime we went out it went with me. Great item to have. |
| Here in West Central Florida I have found that my Lowrance H20finder with software to make my own maps on SD cards just blows away my Magellan and Etrex GPS. Here, if you do any fishing / hunting, then a high-quality GPS is a must. I also never use, but like knowing I can submit an emergency 911 call from just about anywhere on Earth (except bottom half of Africa and pirate seas) from my GPS text messenger / 911 GPS unit called S.P.O.T. |
