Last year, the roaming Vietnam Veterans Memorial paid a visit to my town. I took my teenage son on the evening of the closing ceremony. We walked the wall in the silence, taking note of the names engraved in that dark black stone.
As we walked the wall, vets were taking turns on stage with the mic, recalling memories of their time in Vietnam. One vet made the comment about helping to keep the memory alive, of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. It was suggested that we pick one name from the wall, and take the time to learn a little more about that person. At that moment I looked down to see this large can of peaches. I can only guess the meaning behind the can, but have an idea that it makes reference to the C-ration cans of peaches eaten during that era and was placed there by a friend of the soldier who gave the ultimate for freedom. That person was SGT Brian Gregory Hughes. In keeping with that suggestion to help keep the memory alive, of those who gave all so that we may live in freedom, I would like to take this Memorial Day to present to you these photos. I did not know you Sgt Hughes, but my family and I thank you for answering the call. We will never forget.
