A friend of mine wants to create a shadowbox for her Grandfather (he was Navy if it matters)

I once read where a family member could request (at a charge) all of the medals a individual was awarded.

Any help?

Yes you can through the NARA.  Go to their website and it should have links.

As a side note the medals issued will be new issue.  If he was issued any foreign decorations, French or Vietnamese depending on war, than it's best to buy them from a secondary market.

You can go to www.usmilitariaforum.com and there are a lot of helpful posters there as well.  If he wasn't awarded a lot of medals I think it's sometimes better to purchase ones from that period as they have a more "realistic" look.

Don't be afraid to use your Representatives in Congress...you do pay them to work for you.

I had a DD-214 type form from my grandfather for his service in WWII. Got my Congressman to look into getting his full records and medals, as he was never actually given to him in the first place (according to my father).  Got all his available military service records and TWO sets of his medals that he earned this way. Give it a try.
