Self diagnosing perhaps...I got something going on with 1 bigtoe.  Hurts on top of the knuckle, at first only when I bent it really tight or with pressure from working on my knees*.  Now it hurts from flexing it or putting pressure on the joint.  Nothing on the outside or any injuries.

*TRG told me some pointers about working from your knees but, it is not helping. (I was welding he was doing it recreational.) Don't know if that makes a difference.

i had a buddy that had the same pain , but he thought the toe might be jammed or something. So being the good friend i am, i gave a great big yank on it for him....i thought he was gonna pass out from the pain

he ended up going to the dr and it was gout. Still takes some med for it. and the dr said to drink less beer and less red meat

Good friend of mine has it, almost died last year.

Not to scare you but it's nothing to fuck with, see the doc.

sounds like gout.
Try NSAIDS like Ibuprofen and drink some Cherry juice.

I just came down with gout last month, I'm 31. It sucks big time, but it can be treated. Unfortunately I had to give up beer, though oatmeal seems to cause it to flare up. BLACK cherry juice, water, and some meds will take care of it in short order.

I hope it is not Gout because it can be a crippler...

It is one of the worst arthritic conditions there is for men..

I went through a period of my life where I had some high
uric acid levels and it lead to a couple of severe episodes
of Gout and kidney stones...I am glad I cut that shit out of my life!..

It was some of the most painful experiences I have ever had!

I was told by a Osteopathic Dr to drink a good amount of
natural Cherry juice over the next few days. It tasted like shit
but I got used to it over time but It worked in about 4 days...

NO more symptoms of Gout after going through severe pain for 3 weeks in my all toes and ankle
one one foot and the Great Toe on the other foot...

Gout SUCKS Donkey Dicks!

gout sucks.  My big toe has been bothering me for a long time.  You really have to watch a lot of things on your diet.  I like pretty much everything on the gout list and I'm not giving up my pig meat.  If you drink a lot of Tequila go ahead and stop,  its by far one of the worst things for gout.

Keep it elevated and work the cramps out of it by stretching it and such, it seems to help me

I have it. You'll know if you got it, it hurts like all hell.
I take allupurinol every day, haven't had a flare up in 2 years.
Get thy self to thine Doc. Its treatable. No sense living in pain.
Some foods do affect it but, its a metabolism thing. Too much Uric acid in the blood.
Either you're producing too much or not getting rid of it. Produced by the liver if memory serves me.
Google it, you'll be an expert in no time!

ETA: IM me if you want some more info.

Turkey meat, organ meats, herring, anchovies, meat gravies, beer, and red wine will bring it on quick. I havent had it yet, but almost everyone in my family gets it on occasion. There is a medicine (Allopurinol) you can take daily to keep it from happening. Good luck with it.

Peace,

You should definitely go to the doc, get some tests done and find out for sure if its gout, what your uric acid levels are and whats going on with your kidneys if anything.  Having said that, there are some options available other than the shitty drugs that they prescribe for gout.  Recent studies for instance suggest that vitamin C helps fight off gout.  Personally, I drink less, have lost weight, take 1000mg of vitamin C a day, and avoid foods high in purines (artichokes, liver, certain shell fish...  its a sizable list of crap to avoid or eat less of).

Good luck,

Yuckman

Stops the production of uric acid.
The human body does not need uric acid for any of its functions. Its a by product thats not necessary.

I get gout attacks every 18 months or so.  MY GOD IT HURTS, especially when you drive a manual and your painful foot has to press down on the clutch.

Everyone said it already, cherry juice, ibuprofen, time.

Have you been scuba diving lately?  Seriously.  I thought I had gout once, same type of pain.  I could barely work due to the immense pain in my big toe.  I did a deep dive (I was teaching) and had to dive back down to find a lost diver.  I found him and got the bends for my efforts.

As an instructor you should know the tables......were you using a computer?  Did you go back and chart your dive to see what you did wrong?

Not giving you a hard time.....just wondering how you made a mistake, emergency?

Great stuff, been on it for years. Works well, if I do have an attack it is only for a day or two, and then very light.

Yes, it was an emergency.  I was teaching an Advanced Open Water class, doing the deep dive portion.  My students were my brother and best friend.  My brother was a decent diver and my friend was a very seasoned diver.  We had been on many dozen dives together, deep, wrecks etc.  I took my brother down first, went through the drills.  My friend came down the anchor line a few minutes after.  I went through the drills and skills with him.  As per our pre plan, I went up and did a deco stop with my brother.  3 minutes later my friend was supposed to come up the line and do a deco as well.  He wasn't alone, there were other divers with him as well as other instructors.  After 5 minutes my friend didn't show up.  I was the only one on the boat other than my brother and the captain.  I suited up and went back down hoping to find him somewhere on the anchor line.  I found him on the bottom, lying flat on his back narced out of his skull.  He was trying to catch fish as they swam by.  I grabbed him and immediately went up the anchor line. I ran out of air and shared air with him for the deco stop.  He was fine.  Later that night we were all going to dinner.  I had to cancel because my foot hurt so badly.  I didn't thing anything about it at the time and the guys were teasing me saying that I got "the gout" from eating so much shrimp and seafood the night before.

The next day I realized that I got bent.  But I also believe that I saved my friends life that day.

I have had a couple of gout attacks in the past, and it sucks.  Very painful.

If you are currently suffering an attack, ask you doctor about taking colchicine.  It works pretty good in shortening the gout attacks.  I felt much better the next day after taking the colchicine.  It will give you the shits really bad, but that is much better than the severe pain of gout.  Note:  follow the dosing instructions carefully, and keep hydrated.  Colchicine poisoning is nasty and can cause severe medical problems, so don't take an overdose of it.

Allopurinol works at keeping future attacks from happening. I started to take that, but I ended up having a mild gout attack after I started each dose.  My doc told me that even sudden decreases in uric acid within the body can also cause a gout attack.  I ended up giving up on Allopurinol, and now I have a bottle of colchicine on hand.  Whenever I sense a gout attack, I will take a couple of doses.  It has worked well.

That was my fear when starting allopurinol. As it turns out, it didn't affect me.
I suffered from chronic (over 10 years of constant flare ups) gout before the allopurinol.
Find what works for you. Its no fun and can ruin joints and other medical maladies.

Do not take allopurinol to relieve an acute attack. EVER.

Beg, plead and threaten if necessary your Dr. to prescribe colchacine (sp?). It WILL make acute attacks go away, virtually overnight.  Most Dr's dont prescribe it because of the side effects (squirts and vomiting). My primary Dr. called it "barbaric medicine" - but I got it from a podiatrist a day earlier.  The Rx from the podiatrist was 1 pill every hour till you vomit. Considering how excruciatingly painful gout was, barfing once or twice was an EASY choice for me. Luckily, I didnt yak - only a little squirting the next morning, but the gout was gone.  NSAID's take 3 days to work. Cherries and REAL cherry juice is an old time remedy but does work, it just takes time. Time with lots of pain and days off from work or walking.

Once the uric acid is under control you may need allopurinol.  Try to stay away from purines (look it up - it's what causes gout) but simply it's in all the "good"food. Red meats, beer, shellfish, shrimp, lobster, clams, organ/luncheon meat (SPAM), butter, cream, cheeses...you get the idea.

Get the colchacine ASAP. Thank me later
