hey guys, lets say you saw some guys putting up a new american flag and while they were in the process of they let it touch the ground. the end of the flag touched after the wind tore it out of their hands, it was not their fault because it was caused by high winds and there was no way they could hold of it.

the flag was a big one probably 50ft long and 30ft tall

what would you do? say something or go on your way?

should they take it down and replace it with a new one or is it not that big of a deal.

just curious on your thoughts.

I would definately say something.... If they decided to "raise" it anyway, that is on them...... Sad but on them.....

arn't they suppose to be burned after that happens?

Brush it off and put it up. Wash if necessary.

Just because a US flag touches the ground does not mean that it needs to be (properly) disposed of.

Mistakes happen and as long as they treated the flag with respect I would have no issues.

The flag temporarily touching the ground is not a big deal, you certainly don't need to get a new one.

Shit, how many times do those giant flags that a group of people hold on the field for football/baseball games touch the ground?

I'm all for flag etiquette and showing the utmost respect for our colors, but if somebody was trying to fly it and the incident happened as you described, I would have no problem with them raising and flying it.

This.

I think I would be happy to have neighbors that are patriotic and willing to invest in such a large flag.

Konger

i just couldnt remember the proper way to deal with that situation. when i was in boy scouts i was instructed that if it touched the ground it needed to be replaced. just wanted some clarification on that.

Lol,

I have a 25 foot extend pole.

If it fell I would raise her again.

I am sure she would forgive me, I and my Father fought hard for her and mine is a kind flag.

Leave it up. Letting it touch the ground wasn't a deliberate act of disrespect.

I can see how those huge flags would be a problem, but I think it should be replaced. I have been a member of the VMST (Veterans Memorial Service Team) for about 2 years now, and I have stood at a gravesite and folded and then presented a flag to dozens of grieving and heartbroken relatives of Soldiers and Sailors who have died. It's because of this that I have a ridiculously high respect for the flag and what it stands for. To have a grieving widow hug you and weep on your shoulder as you kneel to hand her a folded flag will change you. That flag is all the comfort they have sometimes, and I'll be damned if I will stand by and watch a flag be dropped or disrespected.

do you think they would be any less comforted if the flag had touched the ground? Or even if you presented them with something other than the flag?

I can see the flag from my dad's funeral across the room right now, and while it's a nice reminder, it's no substitute for the memories, etc.

IMO a flag is just an object, yes the USA is a great nation and arguably better than any other nation on earth... But I don't worship the flag or the nation.

I laugh at the responses to these threads when they come up.  I swear some folks think that the flag is full of magic, that like static electricity, will discharge if it touches the ground.

I won't tell y'all how I sawed a tree down and it fell on my flagpole, snapping it off.  I know some heads would explode.

I'm not really sure why some people think the flag is so special that it should be supremely respected... Perhaps it's an extreme form of nationalism.

I've seen the flag touch the ground plenty of times during colors in the military. They brush it off and put it up.

I really don't know.  [shrug]

I respect the flag, and would jump down someone's throat for intentionally, willfully behaving disrespectfully toward the colors.  But the notions that some have?

No.

The flag is not desecrated. Nowhere in the flag code does it say it has
to be destroyed if it touches Earth. It does recommended moving it to a
better spot so it does not.
