Okay, heres the deal.  I used to play college football (Concordia University) and semi-pro/city league (Flint Falcons/Flint Furry).  I am about 6'1", my playing weight in college was 265# and in the city leagues, it was 275#, I was a brick shit house.  Well I have been "retired" from football for 3 going on 4 years now and have been enjoying skipping the gym for that entire time.  Well it has definatly caught up with me, I am now at 285# and the extra isn't muscle.

I have never been a long distance runner, I hate running long distance.  I can do sprints, but the distance thing sucks.  Well I decided I need to get back into shape, no more being lazy.  So I started running.  First it was around the block and then 2 blocks.  It has only been 2 weeks since I started and I have been pleased with my results.  On Mon, Wed and Fri, I run for distance.  I am only up to 3 blocks at the moment, but its getting easier and I will increase the distance.  On Tues, Thurs and Sat I put 2.5# (per ankle) ankle weights and 1.5# (per wrist) wrist weights on and I run around 1 block as fast as I can.  I am going for speed here.  Sunday is rest day.

Soon I will start hitting the weights hard again and get my strength back.  I used to bench 325# and squat 590# for reps.  I am no where near that now.  It is crazy how fast you lose it when you stop working out.  Like I said, it has only been to weeks since I started again, I tell you I feel great already.  I have not lost any weight yet, but I feel good.  I have way more energy during the day, I feel like I did when I was working out everyday in my football playing days.  For anyone out there that is putting off getting into shape, or like me getting BACK into shape, get up and go around the bloack once.  You won't regret it.  Take it slow like me.  I hate to run, but I love feeling the way I do during the day because of exercise.

Not that you guys care about my exercise but I wanted to share anyways.

I feel your pain. Got up to 270 myself a couple a years ago. I stared by getting a treadmill and walking. As I lost weight I began running. It is a LOT less painful and more enjoyable if you drop about 30 pounds or so. I would walk until then just because of the damage it can do to your feet and knees. I ended up dropping 60 pounds. Good luck to ya!

I tried to start running wearing my non-slip shoes from my old job working as a cook. Now that my legs have stopped hurting 3 days later, I went out and bought proper running shoes and new insoles for them and hope for better results tomorrow morning!

With the exception of cardiovascular health, I say forget sustained running. A lot of joggers pound the pavement day after day and never see any change in their physique. Do a sprint program which you'll probably enjoy more because it's pain for a minute followed by rest and repeat. Lose fat, tone your muscles and increase testosterone and HGH. Compare a sprinter's body to a jogger's body.......

That's funny.  I just got off the treadmill.  I DVR American Rifleman and Shooting USA and the rest of the Outdoor Channel Wednesday night.  That takes some of the sting out of it.

Tip to running:

Find an animal that can eat you. Let it loose about 20 paces behind you.

Exersize Tip: Having a chase car to corral the animal when you're exhausted will save you skin graft bills and/or burial expenses.

this is AWESOME!!! the wife and I started about 3 weeks ago and started seeing results within the first week. With 3 different core plans, it offers a little variety, plus Tony Horton is a damn nut.

I like doing both. Jog for 5 minutes, sprint, slow it down, sprint, slow it down, sprint, repeat.  20-40 minutes of that and you can will be amazed how much you can run endurance after that.

I used to be able to knock out a 5:30 mile my freshman year of high school. Now I would probably drop dead if I broke 8 min.

I'm not running unless someone or something is chasing me.

Fuck that shit.

Try biking, either normal biking or a stationary bike.  Or try swimming.

Much less stress on your joints.

In my playing days I would bike 3 miles to the gym, lift for about 2 hours and bike 3 mile shome.  I was built then.

I was in your same boat a few months ago.

Lose the ankle weights, they will mess you up.

make sure you get good shoes. Go to a running store and they will set you up by testing you to see what your feet do and get you the right shoes. It is definitely worth it.

Go to Itunes and get the military cadences to run to. I really like the Marine Corp. ones.

Doing this helped me drop 40 in 4 1/2 months.

I too was foozball player, people find it crazy when I tell them I was a small D-lineman at 6' 260#'s.   Last year I fubared my back and I put on the pounds.  Down about 20 this year though, as much to healthier eating as to exercise.  Before I got hurt, I still hated to run, it sucks, its freaking retarded, and its painful when you are pounding on two knees that an ortho's had his tools in.  But it is the best way to get that heart rate up and sweat the lbs away.  Turned 30 last month and took stock of my life and decided its time to get what's left of me back in a shape.  All those sexy women aren't gonna screw themselves.

Thanks for the motivation to get my fat ass back to the gym.
