People, I sold four guns today (I know, I know). They were all cheapie $200 guns, and one was Mrs. samsong's, per her direction (needs money for new path on side of house). I have about $600 to spend reliably, and am thinking of getting a Howa model 1500 Varminter (compact) with the Hogue overmolded rubber stock in .308. I have .308 and dies as well, but currently no "scopable" .30-cal gun, a deficiency of the highest order. So, what experiences do you people have with these rifles?

I have 2 Howa's, one a .300 WinMag "Mossberg 1500" which is the first gun I bought and a .270 Howa Lightning 1500. Just excellent rifles, very well made and very accurate. They use Rem 700 scope rings and bases, the bolt handle is machined with the rest of the bolt not brazed on, the action is fully CNC machined.
The .300 WinMag of mine just needs to be rebarrelled as I shot the bitch out as a youth, it will likely become 7mm RemMag when rebarrelled. The .270 Win of mine is a farking tackdriver, probably the most accurate gun I own, my AR's haven't been able to group as well. |

Thanks for the head's up on this, team. I was thinking Tikka T3 for the removable magazine... then I priced one of the magazines. They're like $70, and hold 3 rounds! I figure the Tikka I'd want would end up costing me over a grand by the time I hung decent glass on her.Quoted: My dad has a Howa 1500 in .223. I've put quite a few rounds through it, and it's a great shooter. Good gun for the money. |
