And go check the guns in your safes.

I was just down taking a look at things when I pulled a 590 out of my gun safe and noticed that the shoulder thing that goes up had surface rust on it.  The mag tube did as well and I wasn't able to clean either up with CLP.  I'm going to have to dedicate a night soon and pull everything out and make sure everything is lubed well, I suggest you all do the same.

I haven't been shooting/cleaning as much as I used to because it's hard to find ammo and when you do it's so expensive so some of these things have gone to the wayside for me.  That being said I've been spending more time in GD posting and reading (among other things) than taking care of my tools.  So, I suggest you all go take a look at your firearms and make sure they're in good shape and not rotting.  I think the main thing is to take a look at the firearms at the back of the safe more so than the rest, I was only into the second row when I noticed the 590.....

I've been meaning to take mine out and clean them for months now.  I keep putting it off.  I should do it this weekend.

I've always had a golden rod in there low and to the back as well as a large silica pack on the pistol shelf.  I also have a dehumidifier set at 50% in my "war room".  Between those things I'm not worried about moisture so I was surprised to see the rust stains on the 590.  A few of the other firearms I pulled out were fine so it sort of makes me think something else was going on with the Mossberg.

Shit!!! I went to check on my AR, the damn thing was loaded up and trying to sneak out the back door. There's a school down the road, I'm sure it was headed there!

Seriously speaking use a product called Eezox on the outside and inside of all your firearms. You will not get a speck of rust period.

Google Eezox and tests and you'll find it comes out on top of everything out there for corrosion protection. Better than CLP, Corrosion X, Hoppes, etc.

EEZOX FTW!

And the guy that sells it is very helpful. I have talked to him on the phone a couple time ordering.

I noticed some rust on my Mossberg a couple of months ago. It was on the barrel and mag tube where I grabbed it to put it away after I cleaned it. I was able to scrub it all of with some CLP and a tooth brush but you can still see where it was when you put it up to the light. Must be the Mossy finish? I have been thinking of hitting it up with some aluma-hyde.

I had a dehumidifier go bad a few months back... It was out for less than a week and several guns started rusting.

Ahhh good point, make sure to check your knives (as mentioned above) as well as those steel mags (I'm thinking my Teflon coated aluminum mags are good) as well as your flashlight gaskets/O-rings.

If you want a double whammy of long term protection, nothing beats a nice coating of Eezox inside and out wrapped in one of those poly gun bags that inhibits rust.

I had a firearm trying to rust on me a long, long time ago in a temp and humidity controlled environment.  I wasn't educated enough at the time, still a young lad, and was only  using Hoppes gun oil.  After I switched to CLP, which cleans also, never had a problem again.  Seems, I was sweating and salts were under the Hoppes.

I've heard of Golden Rods.  What are these dehumidifiers you are talking about?  Golden Rods are heaters, they only increase the dewpoint.

Interesting.

I never heavily load up the firearms that I know I'm not going to use for a while with lube/protectant like I should.  I need to start and I'll have to take a look at this Eezox.

Heat just increases the amount of moisture the air can hold. Use a desiccant (silica gel crystals, as noted above) instead.

I live in Nevada, shit don't rust here like it does in your rusty state.

I could leave my guns chained to a tree for a year and not have a bit of rust on it, not even the chain.

Hey fellas another easy and cheap fix is using Charcoal Briquettes. They also work great if you stick one brick in each drawer of your toolbox.

I was an on-site mechanic for the Car Craft Summer Cruise(Minnesota-Humid) and some old timers told of this and it has worked ever since!!

I have rifles stored in a Liberty safe and an oak gun cabinet, and have never had problems with rust ever. No dehumidifiers or anything. When I am done using a rifle I clean it right away and wipe it down with WD-40. I just looked and quite a few rifles have not bean fired in 10 years and have no rust on them.

Buy some big desiccant packs, and wipe your guns down with some Rem Oil with teflon and let it dry on the surfaces.

Brigade Quartermasters sells dessicant units in Tin cases if you can't find them elsewhere.

What is this CLP you guys are always praising here?

CLP stands for "Cleans Lubricates and Protects" and there are about 100 different products that do this.

Is there actually a product named CLP?

Eezox is your friend,

Dessicant, reguraly changed or charged, and you should STILL check them all once aYEAR.

If you want to cut down on maintenance, get grease or cosmoline for those you dont shoot

My old man uses that stuff like water. I never really put much thought into but he leaves his guns in a damp dungeon and all of them are pristine.
