depth of field

out of focus in the foreground, in-focus in the background... which is really the subject (and should be in focus)

I have a feeling each of those photos might be a series of photos from the same vantage point where he layered them in photoshop or something and only allowed people doing/looking similar things to show. This means he had to take quite a few photos for each shot style!

ETA: in the OP's sample photo, everyone in it is looking at the camera!
