My boss has tasked me with finding him a system with 1 camera that can automatically start recording once it senses motion.

The camera probably needs to be an outdoor camera probably with IR since it's going to be in a barn with little to no ambient or artificial light.

We are probably talking a less than $300 set up for the whole shebang. I just started the search myself and I'm not sure what I should be looking for or avoiding.

So chop chop, time is a wasting. Recommend me some options, don't let me down guys.

Your budget is not high enough you need a camera and dvr.

Ok, camera and DVR. Any suggestions? I'm seeing DVRs ranging from 150 to over 500

If you have a computer you can use, you can throw a system together pretty cheaply.

I shopped around and bought a Q-See DVR card and software for $65, and some Chinese cameras that use the Sony SuperHAD CCD for $50 each. They have infrared LED's for nightvision capability.

Don't buy the cheap ready made cables. Get a spool of "siamese cable" and make your own. It's RG59 coax with wires for your power run built in. I found that using better cable makes a huge difference in the amount of video noise/distortion you get on your output.

I've got about $350 invested so far (not counting the computer) and am very happy with the results. I've got it set up with motion detection that emails a pic of whatever triggered the camera and am working on getting the remote view over internet feature working.

I sort of do video security systems as a sidebar to my computer business.

The Q-see route is quick and easy -

But the computer (or DVR) needs to be inside.

If this is an unheated barn that is a distance from the house you will need IP cameras and wireless Access Points, there goes the $300 budget.
