I contacted my satellite tv provider, Dish Network about tossing out news channels I did not want to subsidize.  If youre interested, here is a copy of the email they sent me in return answering my request.

I understand your concern about CNN or in particular about MSNBC. We provide a wide variety of programming in order to appeal to the broadest audience possible. We understand that not everyone will like each program. However, our ongoing research tells us that most customers like being able to choose from so many viewing options.

Our programming packages are designed to give you the best selection of channels for the money and are not customizable. However, we do offer certain channels and premium movie packages like HBO and SHOWTIME on an a la carte basis.

If you would like to upgrade or make changes to your programming, just register at directv.com, if you haven't yet. Once you sign in, you can select your programming package, order pay per view and much more.

Sincerely,

I do not want to pay for CNN, in particular, MSNBC in general.  I want a package that does not spoonfeed my anymore of their bullshit.  I resent paying my money for a service that I do not want to subsidize.  This is no reflection on Direct TV.

Didn't a law recently pass that said the cable and satellite tv companies had to give people the option to choose all the channels they want in their own programming? kind of like allowing us to customize our own?

He used the word "bullshit" in his letter, so of course they will take him super seriously now.

Your satellite provider would be "DirecTV", not "Dish Network".

If they allowed ala carte channel choice then alot of shows would go off the air.  This would be bad for some channels, but CNN and MSNBC need to go down for their bias.  Don't hold your breathe waiting for congress to make them offer ala carte.

I had already moved both CNN channels to the secondary channel list on my DirecTV remote, but after last week I just deleted them both from there, too.

Owning a TV is fine.  I love my big screen for DVDs and XBox.  But, I don't watch TV, and definitely don't pay inflated subscription fees for cable or satellite.

My wife watches it all the time.  Im usually on arfcom if I have the time.  I just hate subsidizing those a-holes.

I quit paying for cable years ago.  I have saved enough money from quitting cable to buy numerous firearms and ammo over the years.

These "packages" are a bunch of bullshit in general.

What they should do is indeed make them customized. I don't want some jackass at Dish Network or Direct TV picking my package for me and forcing me to settle for something I didn't want.

The way those packages should be set up is like this:

1. Create 3 different cost packages, basic, intermediate and premium

2. Assign the various channels certain "value points". Allow you to pick and choose from among them until you have exhausted your points for whatever respective package you choose.

Now, how much better would that simple change make things for the customer?

I have Dish Network. I detested that CNN was the only cable news option for the lower level package. Why don't they allow the customer the choice to choose between several equal channels for that package? I don't ask that they include more in their packages. They don't have to give me CNN, Fox and MSNBC all to make me happy. Just let me pick and choose myself which of those 3 channels I get. Likewise for most other channels. Viewers should be able to decide whether they'd rather have CMT or GAC, USA or TNT, Showtime or HBO, etc.

These pre-assembled packages fucking suck. Give people the option to choose between these various equal channels and build their own packages.

I think it’s just been talked about.

IIRC, the cable/dish companies are bitterly opposed to it.  They no doubt feel they can make more money with the present arrangement (and I’m sure they’re right).   And they’d probably have to redo things to allow it.

I too could do without MTV, network shows, religious shows, Hispanic shows, BET, and such.

Actually, there are only maybe four or five channels that even interest me.

Two hundred fifty channels of mostly bullshit.  I think my wife watches at most ten of that number.  Al carte would be the best for us  but not for the cable companies. Does anyone watch those selling crap channels?  I bet they pay the cable and  satellite people a ton of money to air that crap and then we are forced, as the consumer to pay for that shit.  Its called "marketing strategy".

I could rant for hours.  Sorry.

My tv stays in the corner, unplugged and covered with an old shirt. If I wanted to watch something I suppose I could get a converter box and an antenna.

Any show that I really want to see can be found online anyway.
