who here has had a hernia ?
i split a TON of wood today, 3/4 of the way through i lifted a large ash log onto the splitter and felt a weird... i dont know if id say pop, or spasm in the right side of my belly. for quite a while afterwards my stomache muscles have felt tense. i do tree removal for a living so lifting logs is nothing new to me. but ive never felt that weird deal. i did the "turn your head and cough trick" and both the boys responded. im hoping i just pulled a stomach muscle..... anyone have a hernia and what kind of symptoms did you have? and- no dibs on my guns. itll take alot more than this to kill me. |
| If you have an inguinal hernia (the type you're talking about) you'll have a bump just above and to the right or left of your junk. When you cough, it'll push out, and when you lay down, it'll go away. If it doesn't do that, there's a good chance it's something else. |

I was taking weight training with a friend who outweighed me by about 100lbs. He decided to do squat his body weight one day and I decided to show him up and squat his body weight too. I felt a pop on the 3rd rep, but got out a 4th rep and had to drop the class a week later after seeing my doctor. It wasn't one of my brightest moments, but I impressed my weight training class, so I'd say it was worth it (you get a badass looking scar too)
ETA: aw fuck, I was trying to edit my other post. Oh well. . . |
I've had an umbilical hernia, if you have one you will have a lump as was said earlier. Mine wasn't painful... until it got strangulated! Then it was a trip to the doctor and then the hospital for emergency surgery. If a hernia gets strangulated, you can't keep anything down and you can't pass anything and you will be in pain.

A google image search will give you an idea |

well...
did an entire day or cutting down / dragging / chipping trees / throwing logs in chipper / grinding stumps / estimates / in the beginning my stomach muscles felt pretty tight sore, i felt fine the rest of the day. no bulges i can notice. would it be a 1/2 inch bulge, or a OHMYFUCKINGGOD softball size bulge ? so far i think i just tore a stomach muscle |

I've had a couple myself. One on each side in the pubic area. Carried the first for near a year waiting for it to "go away"...err negative. It was kind of cool in that I could push it in, then flex me belly and pop it out again. Docs at the VA opened me up and stuffed in some chicken wire. Good to go now.

| I had a double inguenal hernia. I had no lumps or bumps poking through my abdomen muscle, but it can happen if severe. I did mine on an a dirtbike ride from L.A. to Las Vegas. After I got back my nuts were aching pretty bad. I figured I hit them on the bike seat and figured I'd give it some time. Two weeks later they still ached so I went to the Dr. and found out I had a double. Had it fixed via laproscopy using the mesh and have been good to do since. |

heres my problem.
when i had health insurance, it cost me 200 a month and then the doctors still billed me up the ass for doctor visits. so i was paying the doctor, plus throwing 200 a month out the window. it expired this winter just due to an overlooked bill. i checked last week to get it reinstated and blah blah blah. this week this shit happens. my stomach feels weird a 1/2 " under my belly button. the real pain was 3" right of it yesterday. but ive done a TON of bending over and picking up wood the last two days so it wouldnt surprise me if my stomach muscles were torn or tired. sounds like you can go a long time without knowing about one. how long is the recovery time for surgery on one? |

Recovery varies depending on how bad the hernia is, apparently mine was pretty severe since I was on medical leave for 6 weeks and still couldn't run much for four months. My father had one a few years ago and he was back at work within the week. From the location you describe it doesn't sound like an inguinal hernia, maybe you are lucky and just have a pulled muscle. |
