Fuck. I took some time this weekend to clean/inspect a bunch of guns that have not been shot/handled in quite some time. One of my favorites is an M48 mauser, that always shot great (even at the 500m gong, using 1957 turkish ammo). It was always my routine after shooting that gun, to spray windex down the bore, then clean as normal. I never had a problem in Arizona. I haven't shot the gun in a few years. It has been stored in a hard case for that time. Periodically, I would open the case and check for surface rust on the bolt/receiver. It was always fine. Today, upon further inspection, the inside of the barrel was completely covered in dark orange/brown rust. I was heart-broken. I then cleaned the bore thoroughly with simple green, hot water, gun solvent (butch's bore solvent), and CLP type product (g96). I brushed it and patched it. There is some shine left to the bore, but also some pitting. How bad is it? Anybody have any insight? Thanks |

The windex contains ammonia to neutralize corrosive salts. I then flushed the barrel and cleaned like a normal gun with solvent and oil. I should definitely recheck the guns (I was checking the outside surfaces to look for signs of moisture, but did not see them). I just never had to do that in the desert. Seattle is a bit different, I guess. Either that, or I messed up last time when I shot that rifle (a few years ago). For some reason, I think the windex I used that particular time might have been "ammonia free." I don't know. Just looking forward now... |
