Anyone here have any experience, or are involved in the field care to share how they like it along with salary if feasible? Around my neck of the woods they make 60-80 k s year and thats all I know.

My wife is a LMSW and she can't get anything more than 32K here. I wouldn't do it.

My sister in law is one who has her masters and makes around $60K, so she says.  I thought you had to be a registered "I know better than you" liberal to apply though?

Mine is as conservative as they come, it's been hard on her. We are in a secluded, back asswards area though.

I interned at a VA mental health center in college. A guy with a Bachelor's in Social Work was making right around 60K per year.

The guy who ran the place had a Master's in Social Work and was making just under 100K per year.

Government pays really well in the social work field.

Social workers become empty shells without souls given enough time.

You wouldn't believe the number of people I meet that have a Masters in Social Work, ten years experience, and earn less than a kid fresh out of college with a bachelors in Business.  You will work with the dregs of society, many of which only come to see you because their government check is contingent on it.  You will toil in a bureaucracy bent on sustaining itself, not helping anyone.  Pretty much a vampire on your soul.

The ones in the hospital make nowhere near that around here.

Imagine spending 8+ hours per day on the phone trying to get folks with no money into nursing homes or psych units.

Yup....my BIL is a gay social worker in Boston, and it has pretty much become his "labor of love", even with a doctorate.  I laugh everytime my MIL  showers him with superlatives.

No offense but if you go to USAJOBS, it shows that Masters level social workers for VA are paid at the GS-11 level (not 60k per year) and that supervisors are GS-12's, which are around 60 to 70k.

So BSW's making 60k is a bit of an exageration.

What exactly could someone with a business degree get a job in? Would the AF ROTC have any interest in either a sociology or business major?
