Since many of us here carry or drive with firearms, and since most of us (civilians) want to avoid encounters with law enforcement, how fast do you drive?

Or, how much above or below the speed limit do you go, particularly, but not necessarily, when traveling with a firearm(s)?

Around the limit, I dont need them getting my money.

If they want it bad enough they will just hit me in a trap area or for some other voilation

Back when I was a teenager, I drove 19 over, as a rule.  I figured as long as I didn't get busted for reckless, I'd be fine.  I was wrong, of course, got ticketed several times, and got rid of my Saab 9000 turbo in favor of a slower 4Runner.  I still have that truck, and I do between 3 and 9 over, depending on if I'm trying to pass someone.  Usually I keep it around 5 over, though.

I go with the flow of traffic, which is typically about 10 over around here if it's not stop and go, and stay out of left hand lane unless I'm passing.

As fast as seems safe.  Empty highway, midday, perfect weather, 10 or more over.  Crowded highway, nighttime, raining, 10 or more slower.

usually 5-10 over.  depends on road, traffic, weather, etc.  some roads with high visibility ill do 25 over consistently.

This.

Blend in with surrounding traffic.......usually 10-15 over on highways. Never more than 5 -9 over when Im all alone on the open road.

Speed limit in town and neighborhoods......I drive ALOT and need my licence.

Drive the speed limit now, in my youth that was another story.

I don't pick and choose the laws that work for me now.............IE, I can legally carry a gun, but I can haul ass down the interstate as fast as I want to.

Funny how that perspective changes as you get older.

I always drive a few below. I putt around in my truck. When me and the GF go out we take her car and I drive under the posted limit then too. My GF on the other hand is always speeding.

I don't follow the flow off traffic, I go the speed limit.  If I'm on the freeway, I GTFO to the right.  I'm not gonna hold up traffic if I can help it. My biggest pet peeve while driving is seeing others not keeping a constant speed.  Unless there is a lot of traffic, I'm using cruise control.  I set it to 65 and make on my way.  I love the morons who  pass me on the left and get 500' or so in front and then randomly slow down and get behind and repeat that madness.  Jesus, its not hard to use an accelerator pedal to keep a constant speed.  When I'm on the open road, I'll go 5 or so over.  No need to push my luck.  I've never been pulled over.  Speeding doesn't do good anyways.  You're endangering your life as well as others, you get worse mileage just to get there a minute or 2 before everyone else.

Thank you!!!  SOMEONE gets it!

I am, by no stretch of the imagination, a slow driver, but I have no quarrel with your type.

I was passed and "unpassed" no less than 3 times by the same idiot on I-10 today.  Given that I was clicking along at approx 78mph, I roughly estimated that their speed was oscillating between 86 and 69 or so mph, with absolutely no rhyme or reason

As fast as possible while maintaining a good safety cushion in all directions.

I drive in general, about 100 miles a day.  If I save say 10 minutes per 100 miles, then i'm saving roughly 40 HOURS a year over not speeding.  Easily worth it to me.

4/4/2009 8:00:15 PM EDT
[#21]
I drive a lot also. I put 45K miles on my truck last year.

Mostly HWY driving and I go 7-10 mph over. In towns I go 5 mph over or the limit.

Most of my tickets have been around my house. Damn speed limits here make no sense or aren't posted.

TX is pretty generous with their speed limits anyway. Some 2 lane roads have 70 mph speed limits. Some parts of the interstate have 80 mph as the speed limit.

Speed limits should be set at the speed 80% of the population drives at by an engineering survey. However, lowering this is an obvious source of revenue for cities and towns.

Edit: I usually drive around 700 miles round trip  a week to my destination. Driving 8 over saves me an hour a week. Which is 52 hours a year.

In town I usually keep it right around the speed limit, sometimes 5 over if that's what the flow of traffic is doing. If I'm on a long highway trip then I'll go about 5-10 over.

Otherwise there's really no reason for me to speed because I leave to where I'm going allowing plenty of time to get there and on my way home there's no hurry. What's the point?

In my car usually no more than 15 over unless I'm in a residential area, too many kids around here.

On my bike as fast as traffic and conditions allow without endangering others.

I always slow down to no more than 20 mph faster than the cars I'm passing, give everyone plenty of space, signal and never split lanes on my bike.

I have no problem with slow drivers as long as they aren't in the passing lane.

5-10mph over most of the time on side roads, if it is safe to do so. The highways around here are 65mph but the average speed is about 75-80mph when there is not traffic so sometimes its higher.

ETA- Its not uncommon at all to have someone blow by you in the far left lane doing 90mph on Highway 99 here in Nor-Cal if there is no traffic. The sterotype of CA drivers being asses and speeders is true.

Depends.

Around town where the kids and the dogs are forever running out into the street I do the speed limit. Out on the highways I say with traffic which is to say 10-25 mph over the posted (does anybody even bother to look ) limit. Occasionally when a CHiP passes I get scared to hell because I have no clue what the speed limit is on the highways I drive ... I slow down to 65 mph figuring that's about the average.

Out on the desert as fast as my angles can fly.

Depends on where I'm at. Around here on the streets I keep it at about 5 over and 5-10 over on the freeway.

If I'm on a longer trip I have been known to go well above that. I used to have to drive from L.A. to the Bay Area on a regular basis (once a month at least) and I would routinely have CC set at 85 on I-5. Once I had CC set at 100 for over an hour till I got pulled over (cop said he had me clocked at 97 but wrote me up for 85).

Up until I got a ticket a little while ago, I'd drive about 10 over depending on the situation. Since the wake up call provided by a certain sheriff's deputy I drive like a grandma (speed limit...maybe 2-3 over if I'm going down hill). The time you save by speeding is negated for the most part by the money you spend on tickets and insurance, esp. for young males like me.

My frontal lobe should be almost done developing...I guess it's time for me to grow up.

Road and weather conditions non-withstanding, I drive at the speed limit, and maybe a few over.  I never go more than 5 over, because I really don't want a ticket.  Most of the time I am right at the speed limit.

If it's snowy, heavy rain, low visibility, kids out playing, etc., I slow down.

I don't need tickets, I don't need points on my license, I don't need the man nosing around in my personal affairs.  Usually I'm going somewhere, and I want to get there on time.  I don't need to explain why I'm late, especially if it's something I've brought on myself.

The speed limit on the Highways he on LI New York is 50 - 55MPH,
The  Long Island expressway was designed for (in 1960) vehicles to travel at 65Mph, Modern vehicles are much more capable than 1960 vehicles.
The speed limit on the Long Island expressway used to be 65 before Jimmy The Peanut man pushed the double nickel down everyone throat.

The average traffic flow speed early in the AM when I leave for work is around 70-75 Mph (20 over the limit).
The only thing I know for sure is 55Mph is way too slow to travel on the LIE in a modern vehicle, It feels like you are standing still!!

I go with the flow of traffic, around here that is 15-25 over in the leftmost lane of the interstates. If you do much less than that you will hold up traffic for miles.

I typically go anywhere from 10mph to 20mph over unless my Valentine one starts to chirp or I am going through the usual cop ambush zones.
