Anyone have a dad or grandfather in this program?

My father entered the program in 1944 (I think) at USC in Los Angeles. He was active duty in the Navy, mostly stationed at Samoa during that time (Signalman 2nd class.)

He spent his entire time drinking and screwing around, so they kicked him out and sent him to the Iwo Jima landing.

After the war, he went to Pasadena City College, back to USC, graduated with a BS in 1950 and later received a law degree.

Anyone else?

Harry Messenheimer, a good friend of the family, was in that program at the time.  Your Dad may have known him. He was a graduate of LA High, and that was about the years he was at USC in the NROTC/V12 program.  He passed away  a few days before last Christmas, and will be buried ata Arlington later this spring.

The NROTC Unit at USC has an alumni group for both NROTC and V12 program members.  Your Dad might be interested.  http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~uscnrotc/

I met and spoke several times with Capt. McGonagal (CO of the USS Liberty) at some of the meetings.  Which is why I get really bent when some folks try to claim that that particular incident was a tragic misunderstanding.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the link, PaDanby.

My dad passed away August 2008. He knew your dad quite well, from junior high through high school. Did your dad go to PCC?

For about a year, then was drafted.  Turns out when I took Physics up there in summer of 71, I had the same teacher as he had had.  He also taught classes in the Criminal Justice major, and then both Traffic School and Mature Driver Improvement in a program sponsored by the school.

Small world.

The South Pasadena crew was very tight. My dad talked about his friends from the time we were kids until he died. Almost 40 years later I find out one of the guys he used to talk about was your dad.
