Experts: Safety Key When Carrying Concealed Weapon
Gun Sales Increasing In New Orleans Area POSTED: 6:37 pm CDT March 20, 2009 UPDATED: 7:07 pm CDT March 20, 2009 NEW ORLEANS –– Gun sales in the New Orleans area have been on the rise. "In the state of Louisiana, you have the right to bear arms," WDSU Crime and Safety Specialist Howard Robertson said. "And Louisiana gives you that right to carry that gun for protection in your home, your car and your place of business." But while most people have a legal right to carry a gun, they are not necessarily allowed to carry a concealed weapon. "We learn how to use judgment, take the shot, when we're supposed to and not supposed to, and learn what are rights are and how to carry a concealed weapon, and the importance of it, and the responsibility of it," gun training student, Tony, said. Learning the rules on the range help gun owners keep themselves and others safe, experts said. "I highly recommend anyone who owns any type of firearm to be certified and take a firearms safety class," certified firearms instructor Mike Jurina said. Robertson said a concealed weapons permit is required for anyone wanting carry a gun at all times. But the permit does not allow people to carry the weapon anywhere. "You can't carry it in any federal building," Robertson said. "You can't carry in any police facility. You can't carry a concealed weapon or any weapon in a prison, on school property or at a church where they're having a function." Robertson also warned that weapons are not allowed in any location where alcohol is sold. In Louisiana, a concealed weapons permit holder is required to be at least 21 years old. In order to receive a permit, a person also needs to pass a handgun safety class. "You also need to be a resident of the state of Louisiana for at least six months and complete a background check with criminal history," Robertson said. Convicted felons and anyone convicted of a crime in the last five years are not allowed to obtain a concealed weapons permit. Robertson recommended that anyone who plans to carry a concealed weapon also buy a secure holster. People without permits are legally allowed to carry a weapon from their house or business to their car and then back. Howard warned that women should not carry guns in their purses. "With the crime rate rising as it is, I think we're going to need to learn how to protect ourselves and I want to be prepared," gun class student, Gloria, said. But Robertson warned any gun owner who chooses to carry a concealed weapon automatically puts their safety at increased risk. "I say, if a guy comes up to you with a gun, even though you're carrying a weapon, give them your money, give him your jewelry, whatever you want," he said. "Unless they're looking to harm you or a family member –– then you might have to make a hard decision." http://www.wdsu.com/news/18979714/detail.html I thought OC was legal in LA. |

Hey Robertson: FUCK YOU! I've been victimized a-plenty over the course of my life. I'm not going to "just give them what they want" just like those people on those planes on September 11th, 2001 did. I'm going to give them the fight of their lives. I've had enough with the "be a meek victim" mentality. John |

| typical victim mentality. they give two shits more for the criminal then our lives. how does this gent propose a citizen with the adrenaline of an ape determine weather this man with a gun/knife wants to actually kill them or just being a bully to get money. hmmmmmm lets try it on him and see if he chooses right. |

Anyone pulls a knife or gun on me, I'm assuming they're trying to kill me, and will respond appropriately. That kinda had me puzzled too. "If a guy comes up to you with a gun..." give him what he wants, "unless they're looking to harm you or a family member". Huh?
Reminds me of the Dennis Miller line about criminals being described as "armed... and dangerous". "I think "armed" just about said it all for me. I mean, when are they ever armed and gregarious?" |

I'm sorry. I had this wild, crazy, dangerous idea that my right to protect myself came naturally. The state of Louisiana is very kind to "give" you a right for protection I guess. |

Six years ago Alaska dropped the necessity for training for carrying ccw, and allowed anyone over the age of 21, who isn't restricted from having a gun to ccw. Prior to that an Alaskan ccw required 16 hours of training with a range test. When that was done away with I was guilty of thinking that without the training, a number of bad shoots would emerge. That never happened. It's been six years since Alaska has not required a ccw permit, and the associated training to ccw. Amazingly so, the crime rate hasn't spiraled upwards, it hasn't reverted to the "Old West", and there hasn't been an escalation shootings, as least any more so than any growing city. edit to add: "I say, if a guy comes up to you with a gun, even though you're carrying a weapon, give them your money, give him your jewelry, whatever you want," he said. "Unless they're looking to harm you or a family member –– then you might have to make a hard decision." I'm not sure how I missed that little gem. If someone comes up to me with a gun, knife, mace, or any other lethal weapon, it's fairly obvious they are going to do me harm, and will be dealth with accordingly. I am not a sheep. |

Hey Robertson: FUCK YOU! this +1. Fuck Robertson. There is no way to tell whether or not somebody is going to kill you after you give them what you have. If that's their plan, then you should have pulled the trigger before the situation got to that point. Once you've given them what they want, and they have their gun on you, and your gun is still holstered, it's far too late. Much better advice: If someone pulls a weapon on you, and puts you in fear for your life or serious bodily injury, shoot them immediately. Don't talk to them, don't give them what they want, just shoot them as quickly as possible. Then call the police, and a lawyer. |

Made link hot. There's a comment section; perhaps we should let them know what we think of Mr. Robertson's comments. |

| I live in La (Not New Orleans but close enough). La does allow oc and as I have just recently renewed my ccl the law is fresh in my mind. Mr. Robertson is incorrect on several of his points because he is paraphrasing the law. For example, "Robertson also warned that weapons are not allowed in any location where alcohol is sold". We are not allowed to carry a weapon inside any area with a Class A alcohol retail permit. That means consumption on premises. I can even carry in a restaurant that sells alcohol as long as I don't go into the "bar". Anyone interested in what the actual law is can check out the La ccl rules pdf. |
