I've been shopping for a 2001-2004 Grand Cherokee with a 6 cylinder for a bit, and I've come across a deal on a 2004 with an 8 cylinder motor in it.
I want the 6 for the famed, bullet proof, 250-300K mile reliability.

How are the 8 cylinder engines for durability, reliability, and longevity?

AFAIK, its a derivative of the old Chrysler 318 C.I.D. If that is correct, it's probably ok.

Should be a 4.7,good engine,SOHC,somewhat similar to Mercedes design,pretty much reliable. Won't take a supercharger though,that's about it. Take off 2 cylinders and you get the 3.7 found in Liberty.

I would get a 4.0 straight six or the 318. The 318 is a damn good motor too. I dont know about the 4.7. It hasent had time to prove itself.

FWIW, I just purchased a 1998 Grand Cherokee with the 5.8L V8 and I love it. When I drive "normally" I get around 18 MPG. When I "play" with it, I get around 12.

its a jeep everything else is goona break but the motor wont!!

got two of em a 5.9 and a six banger .

Last year for the 318(5.2)was '98,the 4.7 is also in Dodge trucks. Good engine for getting the GC around.
