But what if I want to keep them stock? The Marlin is about twice the price.

A stock 10/22 is an inaccurate bullet hose.  (I have one.)

A Marlin is a nice rifle (I don't have one).  I don't know how well they shoot, either.

My point is, buy quality.

Marlin Model 60.  You'll never lose the mag, it shoots under 2" at 100 yards.  Put a decent scope on it, feed it quality ammo and it's a can/paper/skwrl killing machine.

Take the barrel band off, change to a lighter trigger pull and your groups will shrink. Even by using the stock barrel and stock.

10/22 all the way.

Check out RFC "Rimfire Central" website and do some reading on both..

For my money it would be the Marlin or a Henry with Octagon Barrel.

The Henry was my other lever choice.I am really asking for input on current QC as well as overall quality.

10/22, hands down.
More stuff for it, so you can do more with it.

Both.

But also and seriously, I'd buy the Ruger semi-auto, and then the other brands in lever actions and bolt actions.

Well that's a weird one. Deciding between a 197 dollar .22 from WalMart or a 500 dollar lever action .22 you could pass down to your kids and them to their kids.

The 39A is considered by many to be the finest lever action .22 on the market. Go to rimfire central and you'll find out the love these get over there.

I'd go with a Marlin model 60 for 135 bucks and have fun with it. I love mine! All my 10/22 did was jam, jam again, and jam some more, no matter what I had done to it or what ammo/mag I used. Ruger has really cheapened these up a lot. I wouldn't mind an older one though.

In the 70's I owned a Winchester 255 lever in .22 magnum;loved that gun but had to sell.I am a member at rimfire central but wanted the opinions here. Thanks guys.

Sounds like you answered your own question. I prefer the Ruger to the Marlin.

Bullshit, you don't know how to shoot.

I got a couple of used Marlin's one is a m-60 the other a m-99. I could buy two more of them and still not spend as much as a new 10-22 costs. The Marlins are about as accurate as anyone can use and both have 18rd tubular mags.

You are  wrong about that.  I know how to shoot.  Very well.

That's how I can identify an inaccurate rifle.

If you think that a stock 10/22 is accurate, go test drive an Anschutz smallbore rifle.

I'm happy with the accuracy of my stock 10/22, but I have a question...what does taking the barrel band off do? Why does it improve accuracy?

39A. You won't need to customize it and spend all that money on aftermarket mags.
