Well...to make a long story short, I am putting in my resignation today at work.  The reason is that I am going to follow one of my dreams by joining the military.  But, I'll be god damned if I'm not nervous, I have never done this before. I kind of feel dirty about it, like I let someone down.  Is this normal?

why do you feel like your letting some one down?  Your employer? Family?     It's your life do what you want to do.  You have to do what's best for you.

Just tell them your going into the military.  If you want to go back to work there they may  or may be required to hold a job for you when you decide to get out.  I believe there is some sort of law on this.  Im sure someone will be along with better info.  Good luck and thanks for serving.  Just remember it gets better after basic.

x marine here.  Just be very sure you know what you want otherwise you will have to fulfill a several year contract doing something you may not like.

1.   Are you getting a contract gaurantee for the job you want?
2.   Are you getting a signing bonus?
3.   Full time or reserve.
4.   Officer or enlisted.

If you go reserve if you dont like it no big deal and you can go to college which if you don't have a 4-year is probly the best move for later on.   If you go full time this can be much harder.

I was full time and to tell you the truth "it was the best of times and it was the worst of times".   Mostly the most boring times.   I hope you like to hurry up and wait then run like hell because we are late.   That is the one thing i never adjusted too.

The best move for most folks is to go reserves go to college then when they either have a 2year and can go cwo or get the 4year and go full blown officer.   I really wish i had gone this route.

One of the smartest guys ive ever known went in to the USMC and they made him a cook.  He is now flying planes in the navy because of mega bs he had to go through.  THat said they did pay for his school and all of that and he is now pretty happy.

I also know of a USMC reservist "average guy" who got his 2year and is now flying choppers for the national guard who didn't have to go 25% of the bs as the smart guy went through.

Its all your decision but do your homework and you will be much happier.

That said good luck and get everything in writing.
