Anyone know anything about metal detectors? My wife wants one, of all things, for her birthday. I don't know the first thing about them. I guess I'd be looking for a capable, beginners model. She mentioned that some have a screen that you can "see" what's been detected. I'd appreciate any ideas, or models/manufacturers you can recommend. Thanks.

The best IMHO is Minelab. Whites, Fisher are good. I've heard the lower end Bounty Hunters aren't bad. It all depends on your budget. Be sure to look at the weight.
ETA I've got the older Minelab Soverign, the nice thing about it is it has 16 tones that corespond to the metal conductivity. Don't really need to see a screen, lower tones are usually junk, the highest tone is always coins or gold/silver. No tones for iron so you don't even get a hit on bottle caps etc unless you turn it on for relic hunting. I've found dimes 12" down at the beach. Sometimes it's a pita digging a hole up to your elbow

My wife got me a mid-range Bounty Hunter. I returned it un opened and got a better one used off Eghey.
Haven't used it enought yet for a range report. If I remember correctly, I kept coming back to Kellyco. Their prices were good and they sold scratch and dent....I'm a cheap ass. What can I say. |

Another + 1 here Quoted: Quoted: Garrett Ace 250 is a good beginners Detector. Can pick a new one off Ebay for $225.00. That's my go to Detector for travel, or when I don't want risk my Minelabs. I have found several nice Rings with it. I got one of those and love it. Treasure Quest Metal Detecting |
