My troop was speaking to the First Sergeant earlier today over the phone about getting his shotgun imported back from Misawa AB, Japan, where it resides in the armory, back to the States.  His PCS was a huge cluster fuck, and the armory screwed up paperwork before he left so he's having to jump through hoops.

Anways, during the conversation, the First Sergeant told my troop that a gun shop/indoor range across the highway from post is charging TWO HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS for a damn FFL transfer.

Seriously, wtf.

(also, their glocks are ~$600 since even before the panic buying, and everything else is similarly ridiculous)

Find another shop.

Well, yea...  I know a shop that's only 30 bucks, I just can't believe they would charge such a ridiculous fee.

Dont know the answer, but would it just be cheaper to apply for his own FFL and have it mailed to him directly?
How much does it cost to get an FFL and how long does it take?

No kidding. I would think soldiers would have the cheapest transfer ffl around all scoped out.

Anyway you can get a list through Gunsamerica. It takes some sorting because they never removed people who stop doing it, but it just takes some time to find someone reasonable.

Especially for a soldier, that's beyond fucked up.

I think the average price is between 30 and 50 bucks.

Ohh, I just remembered my First Sergeant is a shooter also, and was more warning my troop.

One time I was in the orderly room, and the topic of ammo prices was brought up with another SSgt I talk guns with.  The First Sergeant came through the hallway and said, "It's all the fucking Chinese's fault for buying up all the raw materials."  I about busted a gut laughing.

On Target

$100. is standard here in CA.

you can ship a gun to yourself, IIRC.

Just take the barrel off, label it as machine parts.

I have shot there a few times years ago, and one of my co-workers who recently
started shooting has been going there. I'm sure they aren't doing many transfers
if any at that price. Sounds like a deterrent practice to me.
ETA: Another one of my co-workers lives on post there.

It should be free for service members.

He's here in MD, shotgun is in Japan.  Armory won't touch it aside from putting it in a box, and the most painless way to get it here is going to be through a good local shop that only charges 30 for a transfer.

We pay $10-20 here.

I agree it's probably a detterrent tactic.  I don't buy anything there because high prices.  The only purchases I've made since I moved here weren't possible at On Target since they don't carry stripped lowers and they don't participate in the LE/.mil Glock discount program (only 1 dealer in MD does).

What part of TX?  I have family there, and I'm trying to get stationed in San Angelo.

I gave 10 G3 mags each for my last two transfers.

This. A local place charges 10% of the gun's cost plus $25. Most other places are $20-30

If I knew the sender I'd have'em mark the sales price as $1.00.

Right. I will pay no more than $25 MAX for paper work. Anything other than that is preposterous.
