I'm so sick and tired of the target stands at my local public range being shot to hell and back all the time. I spend 15 minutes jerry-rigging whatever remains are left of what used to be a target stand.....7.4 minutes shooting....another 23 minutes trying to fix said target stand after the wind took it out....

So here's my question: what's the best, cheap target stand I can buy to take out to the range myself from now on? I've thought about making my own out of 2x4's but that would be impossible to transport in my small car. too poor to afford the private range.

any suggestions are sincerely appreciated!

you can make your own for half of the midway price...

2" pvc pipe, two elbows and two T fittings = approx $10

ETA: this was Old Painless's idea and plan

Dillon has one in their catalog. You have to provide a couple of 1x2s.

If you can weld you could use the illustration for a guide. It's about 30 bucks. Maybe 5 bucks worth of materials.

Looks like the pic CB1 put up, only in metal.

That right there.

Cheaper and works better than anything comparable that you'd buy ready-made.

what is the ground like?  if you can stick things into it easily, make a frame out of pvc tubing that you can: a) stick into the ground (sharpen the down ends), and b) stick furring strips into.super simple, cheap, acn be broken down easily, quickly, readliy available.

If you have pallets there (or any other base that will stand sturdy on the ground, if you can't stick the pvc into the ground directly), drill holes into a pallet board (one hold for each pvc strip), space the holes  the width of your target, stick a foot or so of pvc tube into the hole (so it sticks up), 4-5 feet of furring strip sticking out of that, staple your target to the furring strip.  should be a couple bucks total investment per target stand.

I made a set using O_P's design out of PVC pipe.  I think the two may have cost $26 dollars in material.  They can be broken down and put into a small duffel bag for trips to and from the range.  Will have to see if I have pics on my laptop or not

ETA: yep, that exactly the same style as the pics above

Real estate signs, perfect in every way.  Lot's of former realtors = lots of old signs.  Easy to set up, targets staple well to them, and they're cheap.

Ed made one of those but we had trouble with it blowing over. Would work fine with some rocks or logs to put on the legs, we just did not have any

edit I doubt Ed bothered to follow any instructions when he made his

You could probably fill the lower tubes with sand or something heavy.
