Although "glory" is a funnier answer

It's used to disassemble the bolt.

Pic is blocked here at work, but it's probably for disassembling the bolt.  Probably not using the correct terms, but once you remove the firing pin assembly from the bolt itself, slide the front end of your firing pin into the hole in your stock.  Push down on the back of the firing pin assembly/safety and that should allow you to further disassemble it.

Most of these guys are right, it is to place the firing pin into to compress the spring so that the cocking piece can be removed and then the bolt shroud and spring can be removed from the firing pin for cleaning.

It is to help detail strip the bolt.

ETA: Run on sentence FTW!

Yep. That's what I've always heard.

Of course a gun shop commando once told me it was to hang the rifle on a rack. He got pretty ticked and very irrational when I said it was for bolt disassembly. Apparently the Germans "never had time to break-down their weapons". "Every soldier on the Eastern Front was involved in a non-stop firefight".

It's for holding your cigarette while you are throwing a potato masher.
