I tried to defrag my hard drive now I get this. I ran the XP disk and still get the startup in safe etc screen, Tried chkdsk and fixboot at the prompt but it still wont boot Windows XP up.

Any help, or did doing maintenance screw me in the end.

Sounds to me like the HD is gone.

ETA: Make sure no CD-ROM or UBS/other media is in when you re-start.

I looked it up, seems like a minor hiccup with an easy fix but not for me.

Oh well, the Compaq did make it from 2003 til today. Only downside is I dont know if I can find my USB stick with all my passwords and addresses.

Heres to hoping and man this desktops dusty and the keyboard sucks ass.

It's not necessarily total hard drive failure. Try fixmbr or slap it into another PC and see if you can read the partition with it. You might be able to get some data off of it, but you may end up needing to format it again.

Right now I have it slowly going through the hard drive with the chkdsk /p command, then one day this week I'll try the fixboot command.

If it's 6 years old and there's nothing on the disk worth saving, then junk it and start over, a 6 year old computer isn't worth what it will cost to check it out.  If there's stuff on it worth saving, then it's worth something to try to retrieve it, but be aware that if the circuit board is dead, the cost of retrieving the info can be high, $500 is a lowball starting point.

Any local computer guy or repair shop should be able to tell you if it's accessible for an hours labor.
