ft leonard wood, Missouri. this is going to be my first time out of oregon Leonard wood is going ot be hot and humid that time of year. Get used to drinking ALOT of water. There will also be bugs....lots and lots of bugs, especially mosquitos. If you aren't already, start running and doing push ups and sit ups every day. It will make your life much easier when you get there. BTW, what part of Oregon are you from, I'm from a little town called Forest Grove, about an hour outside of Portland. |

One of my best friends was supposed to join up with me but he pussed out and is going with the airforce instead. hey fuck you puto, you get to inter-service trash talk AFTER you actually finish basic and join the real military
speaking of which, dont be pissed because your friend actually spelled his name right on the paperwork. (congrats on joining and welcome to the dysfunctional family!) |

Lots of people have already said it, but start PT now. Basic was a blur, and a long time ago, but remember not to F your buddy, listen to what the Drills are telling you, and be prepared to meet some people that are nothing like you've ever known before. Don't be a jackass, your rep starts from day 1, and you're signing on for a long stint, so you will run into people you meet in Basic again.
Good on you for volunteering! |

Thanks for your service.
I hate being in the Army. I joined to serve my country and defend the Constitution and we don't even salute the flag when it goes up in the morning during PT. This is way different than I thought it would be. I'm sure I'll look back on it as a good thing, but as for right now it sucks. Some people really like it, especially if you have a family to support, but I just can't live with the fact that I'm sitting on my ass for 10 hours a day at the cost of hard working Americans' tax dollars. |

Have a good time! start working out, doing push ups, sit ups and running, now. This. Basic isn't hard. If you're in good shape, that will make it that much easier. ETA: FWIW, I wasn't overweight, but I wasn't in good shape when I went to Basic. I never played any sports my entire life, and only really started running two weeks before, and I didn't think it was that hard. If you're in good shape, it would be a breeze. I actually had a blast for the first three weeks at Leonard Wood (October). Then the weather turned cold and rainy for practically the remainder of the cycle, and half of us were horribly sick for the rest of it. If it wasn't for that, I'd have had a ball. |
| If you fuck up, own up to it. Integrity will get you far in the Army. You're going to meet some interesting people from all over. I found the story tellers to be the most annoying people (the one that did 20 years worth of work in 4 years). It's the ones that don't tell the storys that are most interesting and actually did something worth a damn. |

Joining the army was pretty much the best and the worst time of my life, at the same time.
During NBC training, the range sergeants had gas canisters on the end of long sticks. They'd pop gas and throw it around us when we were marching, and then the ones with cans on sticks would come out and walk around us. This idiot kid in my platoon dropped his weapon and took off running one time when we got gassed. The sergeant ran right behind him holding the stick over his shoulder, with the can right next to his face. He ran into a tree. Those Georgia pines are hard when you run right into them. We had another loser who pulled the pin on a training grenade and threw the pin instead of the grenade. The grenade went off in his hand. The cap just cut his hand on the way out of the shell, no big deal as far as injury. He never lived it down though. I got caught doing an impression of one of my drill sergeants. The others thought it was so funny that they wouldn't let him fuck with me. Later I got really sick and got sent home. When I was waiting in holdover barracks to go home, Sgt. Rosario (the one I did the impression of) came by to see me. He was a really cool guy. They all were after I became a civilian waiting to go home. I was in one of the last infantry school classes to go through Harmony Church at Ft. Benning. That alone was worth going for. |
