The other day the ugliest helicopter flew low past my house. It had 4 blades, 2 on one shaft and 2 on the other, the shafts tilted to the side and the blades were timed so that they wouldn't collide. Aproaching, it sounded like an old dump truck with a flat tire. I've been searching around but can't find anything.

I know someone here knows all about them, what the hell is going on with that set up?

I know what you are talking about. The two rotors are next to each other.

IIRC its used for heavy lifting and used in the logging industry a lot; its a European design.

Similar to this?

The rotors counter-rotate, therefore the design can dispense with the tail rotor. No tail rotor to counteract main rotor torque means more power for lift and motion.

saying "ugly helicopter" is like saying "blue sky" or "green grass".... the adjective is understood.

Heathen! There is no such thing as an ugly helicopter.

The one I fly in is downright sexy!

The K-Max strikes me as something that has a greater than normal potential for catastrophic failure. What's the safety record on those?

Maybe i'm a little narrow minded, all i'm familiar with is what i fly around in while working in the GOM.
