My son is 16, when he was born , my dad who retired and moved to   Fla,would go to these flea markets and buy him baseball cards, The ex sent them to my house the other day. There are literally 50 /60 unopened full sets of different brands of cards ,also dozens of unopened collectors specialty sets, that come in tins , and little collector boxes. They range in date from 1989 to about 1996. Are these things worth that much more than what he paid for them. A lot of the complete sets were under $20.

So by sets, do you mean just boxes of cards with individual packs like they would have on the shelves at a store?  Or are you talking about complete sets with numbers 1,2,3,4,......etc where you know you have every card?

Honestly, nowadays, most of those sets are probably only worth that much. Back during the mid 90's was when those types of sets and of course individual cards were worth a ton, but the Baseball card market took a major dump about 6 years ago, and really, the only collectible sought after cards fetching decent money are the '75 and earlier sets.
