I recently got a job as a one on one aid at an elementary school.  Today the kid doesnt show up so I go home.  the wife (who also works there) says they might have put me with another student.  I was hired to work with a specific student by name and I don't have any interest in subbing for other aids/teachers that don't show up.  Did I do the right thing?

I would say that what you did was probably alright, but I would not expect the school to be tripping over themselves to work with you in the future.

That's called being a team player or in your case not being a team player. Employers don't like that. This is one situation where Yes we can! would have been a good thing.

A note for all employees:

If you suddenly find yourself without something to do, the ethical action (and your best bet of getting promoted) is to make yourself productive somehow.

If you just leave, fall asleep in your car or troll ARFCOM, you're doing it wrong.

I would have probably hung around and asked if there was anything else that needed to be done before I left.

This. If you don't show value to your employer, why should he value you?

I'd have checked out with someone in admin before I just popped smoke.

Do you get paid for the whole day whether your kid shows up or not?

Heaven forbid you would've helped out in the cafeteria or something, eh?

Did you ask before you left?

As regards ethics:

My philosophy is that if you take money to do a job, then you do that job to the best of your damn ability, whether you like the job or not.

But in your situation, it sounds like you need a little more clarification from the school as to what exactly is expected of you.

update.  turns out they will never ask me to do anything other than work with that specific kid.  these kids need consistency more than anything so a new face is hard for them to deal with
