Thanks to everyone that called
Last night we had a VERY large turn out and it wen't well. The room was overflowing. The county commission took the AWB support item off the agenda before the meeting and their first order was to revise the meeting agenda. I think they got the point. Here are the two news paper articles about last night. http://battlecreekenquirer.com/article/20090205/NEWS01/302050009 9 P.M. UPDATE: The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners has selected Dr. Lee Kirk, an Albion chiropractor, to serve as interim 7th District commissioner. A special election to fill the seat for the remainder of Eusebio Solis's term has been set for August. Despite the fact that a gun control resolution was pulled from the agenda before the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners' meeting, it was standing room only in the 200-capacity board chambers on Thursday night, with more than 60 additional people flooding the hallway. A thunderous Pledge of Allegiance preceded a series of speeches on upholding the U.S. Second Amendment, which received applause and some standing ovations. While Chairman Mike Rae, D-Pennfield Township, told the crowd prior to the public comment that the item was mistakenly placed on the agenda, veterans, sportsmen, hunters and other residents spoke out against ever bringing the item up again, pleading with the board to commit to keeping it off future agendas. http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/article/20090206/NEWS01/902060318 Citizens pack meeting for gun-control item MARSHALL –– Despite the fact that a gun control resolution was pulled from the agenda before the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners' meeting, it was standing room only in the 200-capacity board chambers on Thursday night, with more than 60 additional people flooding the hallway. A thunderous Pledge of Allegiance preceded a series of speeches on upholding the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which received applause and some standing ovations. While Chairman Mike Rae, D-Pennfield Township, told the crowd before the public comment period that the item was mistakenly placed on the agenda, veterans, sportsmen, hunters and other residents spoke out against the item, pleading with the board to commit to keeping it off future agendas, or to vote against it in the future. U.S. Air Force veteran Tom Starkweather of Battle Creek told the board it should focus on educating the public about proper and safe gun use, rather than taking away rights from law-abiding citizens. Starkweather, 53, served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force. "It was troubling to find out, after serving that number of years defending the Constitution, to learn they're trying to chip away at those rights," Starkweather said before the meeting. "It never should have been on the agenda in the first place," Rae said. Before the meeting, Rae said "I'm not even sure where it came from," but at an 8 p.m. recess he admitted to putting it on the agenda himself. "I'll take responsibility for that," Rae said. Board secretary Mary Lou Barrett said during the recess that the item came in alongside another communication from the NAACP, a proclamation declaring Feb. 12 "NAACP Centennial Day." "They were supporting it, and were asking for our support, too," Barrett explained. "Usually that type of communication would go on the consent agenda. It was mistakenly placed on the agenda as an action item." At the meeting, the proposed ban gained attention from activists such as Judy Robinson, club manager of Centerline Gun Club, secretary of Calhoun County Gun Owners Association and a member of the American Federation of Tactical Shooters. Robinson said Rae called her this morning about the item coming off the agenda. Commissioner Terris Todd, D-Battle Creek, said toward the end of the meeting that he would have opposed the resolution, and Commissioner Jim Haadsma, D-Battle Creek, Commissioner Julie Camp, R-East Leroy, and Rae echoed that sentiment. "Frankly, it's an infringement on citizens' rights," Todd said. Assistant County Administrator Brad Wilcox said Thursday he could not find any current county gun ordinances, and that the agenda item was a resolution of support for existing federal legislation rather than a consideration of a new county law. After the crowd thinned out, the county board in a 5-0 vote, with Haadsma abstaining, appointed Dr. Kirk Lee, D-Albion, as new District 7 commissioner to replace Eusebio Solis, D-Albion, who resigned his post Jan. 8 to become the county's chief assistant prosecuting attorney. Before the appointment, Haadsma moved, with support from Camp, to not fill the District 7 seat until voters choose a replacement. "It became apparent to me that whoever we appoint would have an advantage in the primary, and that is why I have changed my mind," Camp said. That motion was defeated 4-2, supported only by Haadsma and Camp. "It is quite evident that the people of the Seventh District would like to have representation, and have representation now," Todd said. Darby Prater can be reached at 966-0589 and [email protected]. Anybody that is local, please try to make this meeting. This is in the Michigan forum, but this is REALLY important. The more these people take stances to show support for a AWB, the more screwed we are. So we need to knock EVERY one of their proposals down. Mod's if you have a problem with this, go a head and delete it, but I hope you don't ,because this is important. Looks like the antis are starting to push the "local" vocal support for a new AWB and you are going to see more of this around the country. Just like Miami a couple of weeks ago. I got this quote from the Michigan forum: "The purpose of this resolution is a government voice calling for Congress to re-enact an AWB. This falls right inline with the Karl Lenin call for reinstatement of the AWB. It may be a coincidence that Republican Congressman Fred Upton was invited to watch the Superbowl with Obama at the White House. It may be a coincidence that Fred Upton represents Calhoun County and it is the Calhoun County Commission that is advancing this AWB resolution . Fred Upton was THE ONLY MICHIGAN REPUBLICAN Congressman to vote for the 1994 AWB. Maybe the Obama Administration and the left wingers are trying to line up or gauge support for a new AWB among key members of Congress in order to line up BI-PARTISAN support.....?" We need to make a stand and let these people know we are not going to put up with their crap and that we'll stand up if they try to take a way our Rights. I'd like to ask all of you to fill up their voice mail boxes and let them know it's more than just a couple of people they are up against. I believe here in Michigan, we are going to fill up that room, but personally, I don't feel this is enough. Below is the county commission AWB agenda item and below all of this is a sample of what you can say if you want to call these people and let him know what we think about their support of taking away our Rights. Calhoun County Commissioners will be voting on a resolution this Thursday. Which reads as follows: Calhoun County Commission Agenda Item 12.A. (5) for 2/5/09 WHEREAS, present levels of gun violence in the United States are far higher than in nations which regulate gun purchases more stringently, NOW, THEREFORE, the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners support: (1) The renewal of the ban on sale or purchase of assault weapons (making the ban permanent); and (2) The enactment of laws at all levels of government to make it harder for those with diminished mental capacity or criminal intent firearms either legally or illegally. Any interested parties please attend for a show of support. The meeting starts at 7:00PM Thursday, February 5 in the Calhoun County Bldg, 3rd Floor Commissioners Chambers, Marshall MI. It would be nice if we could make an impression on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners and let them know they don’t have permission from anybody to pass this resolution. Here is a sample that you can use if you just want to give them a call: In Calhoun County you are trying to pass a resolution expressing the limitiation of my Rights and redcing my freedom, you DO NOT have my permission or my support to do so. There are many things that need your attention on behalf of the citizens rather than reducing the Rights of our citizens. Please focus your efforts on employment and your budget and be ever mindful of my Rights protected by the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article 1 Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution. Our brave citizens are fighting and dying in foreign lands to protect our Freedom at the same time you dishonor their sacrifice by trying to strip US citizens of these same Rights they are dying to protect. Personally, I'd be ashamed of taking the stance of stripping citizens of their God given Rights. http://www.calhouncountymi.org/departments/BoardOfCommissioners/OverviewBOC.htm 2009-2010 Chairperson Michael Rae (D) (269) 965-3766 Lisa Gerow (D) (269) 660-9612 Terris E. Just for fun why don't you go down to the police station and have arrest warrants issued for ALL the members of the Calhoun County Commission based on the following United States Code. I'd love to see all the anti's prosecuted under this US Code; can you imagine the mayhem that would ensue the first time that this is successful? Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or to different punishments, pains, or penalties, on account of such person being an alien, or by reason of his color, or race, than are prescribed for the punishment of citizens, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/242.html |

I should have been more specific in my post above. As I read it Cliffhanger you couldn't actually charge them under that US Code until they have actually passed the ordinance or statute that infringes upon your rights as affirmed under the 2nd Amendment and recognized recently by our US Supreme Court. I see quite a bit to gain however by making many copies of it and sharing it with others of a like mind as yourself and then reading it aloud to the Calhoun County Commission letting them know that you and others will charge them if they pass it; this is a right that they are attempting to subvert, no different than if they said that black people can't vote in their town, people may not gather peaceably in groups or 3 or more, or all newspaper articles must be pre approved by the Calhoun County Commission. |

Excellent work!! Thanks Cliffhanger for posting this. Agreed. Great work Cliffhanger! As the saying goes "All politics is local." Weall need to stay on top of "Our employees" and frequently remind themthat they work for us and not the other way around. You know, I do believe if more of this happens, it will reverbarate all the way up the chain. These local politicians talk to state politicians and so on, so when they see serious opposition, they flinch and back down. I think it's time to make ALL of them flinch back down. Politicians usually don't have a couragous hair on their head and will only go the way of the wind to save their political position. They don't have the conviction to fight and if necessary to die for their beliefs like our service members, veterans and proud Americans do. They need to understand, this isn't the land where tryanny will be able to run free. This is American baby! |
