The very best thing you can do is go to a local GM dealership (if you know someone that works there) and have them run the VIN in the Service Dept for the Service History on that car. It will show everything the car was ever brought in for under warranty - owners description of issue, what they found, parts they replaced and dates and mileage. THAT is how you know if it's had issues in the past. If they won't do it, walk away. They may act like they have no idea what you're talking about - walk away. They are hiding something.
If you don't know someone, join dieselplace forum and post the VIN in there (they have a section for VIN requests) and one of the techs that hang out there will run it for you in a couple days. When me and my wife were looking for a used Yukon/Tahoe for her we did this and were SAVED from buying a total cherry looking Tahoe that turned out to have problems nearly every 3500 miles up until 38,000 miles when the lady traded it back in. Carfax is 50% at best. My wifes first car was a camaro that her dad bought from a rebuild place. It had been 2 cars put together to make one and had a clean carfax.
