I was recently on a trip and my Garmin fucked me for the first time. Apparently my maps are older than the highway that was built 3 years ago. I bought the unit last year.
Garmin sells a one time download update for $70, and a lifetime (up to 4x/yr.) for $120 on their site. Worth it or ass raping? Is there an alternate source of reliable updates besides Garmin? Going on a trip tomorrow, OCD is flaring up. Help a brother out. Thanks. |

Yes, I know you get one free update when you buy a new one. I don't know if it continues beyond that - I have not checked again.
You have to download software for your computer. Download software for your GPS. Download the map - it's over 2gigs and takes a long time. So plan some time. |

I just now registerd the thing and did the map upgrade search. It did not offer me a one time / first time freebie. It took me right to a page selling this new map upload - City Navigator® North America NT 2009.1 Map Update Huh, that's odd. I bought mine a few months ago, and found the updated map thing by accident when I registered it. This was a basic model Nuvi 200, maybe it's different for different models. I believe this was the website I used: Garmin Updates |

I updated mine to 2009. I didn't pay for it because it's rediculous to pay for something thats still not fully updated. If you have torrent you can find it there. Um... Enlighten us please Add me to the list of people with a newer Garmin loaded with older maps.

True but it may only be for the specific unit you have. If the unit breaks or you get a newer one, you may be SOL. If you guys are interested in how or what updates this map has, one website I frequent and pull my POIs from is poi-factory.com
You can browse the forums and see user gripes and expereinces. |

Check ebay, I bought a map for Australia and China for like $30 on the SD card. They worked perfect when i was over there. Did you lose your orginal USA maps when you used your SD card? Nope, all the preloaded info stays on the hard drive, You put the SD card in and it loads the maps off the card. The drawback is no card=no maps. But you can swap the card between different Garmins |

The SD that you buy from garmin I think, don't quote me this, can be copied from the card to the hard drive of the GPS, but will only work with one unit. I do know you download the up to date maps free off the web, put it on a card and then transfer it to the garmin hard drive. It's not the legal way of doing it. Haven't tried it because the software is PC only, I run a mac |

Well... my head is about to explode.
I just spent the better part of 2 days downloading the 2009 maps for my Garmin via bittorrent... and I'll be goddamned if I can't figure out how to install the fucking thing in my GPS. The instructions are obviously written by a goddamn computer geek and don't do shit for the average Joe. (me) I should have just spent the fucking $60 on the Garmin website and been done with it. |
| ell, i updated mine- fucking garmin in their infite cheapness only puts JUST enough memory in the fucking piec of shat to hol maps. it took forever to download nad i had to go into the operating system of the fucking thing to delete all other languages and a buch of othe shit to make room for their download. adding a sd card dosent do shit as the maps gota be on the main unit memory. what a fucking pita. why they dont just add a little more memory is beond me... |

Any simple pointers to help a novice ?
I think all I need is a key and I should be good to go... |

I have a USB cable that came with my 250g external Hdd... that should work, right ?
For whatever reason, when I plug the GPS into my 'puter, it doesn't see it as a "drive" when I click on "my computer"... so I can't get in to it and wipe out the old files to make room for the new ones. |

Try plugging it in, then restarting your computer. Apparently if the thing is connected at start-up, you can view it as a "drive". RF |

Meh... never got it to burn over the old maps or even see it as a drive for that matter...
I did manage to get the '09 maps loaded however... after I bought a 4g SD card and plugged it into the unit. That's the only way I could get the new maps to work with my (C330 Streetpilot) units. I have two of them. Took about an hour to load everything... |

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 200 after Thanksgiving 2007 for $200, and a Tom Tom ONE after Thanksgiving 2008. The Nuvi is a POS. Always shows me going offroad, and somehow my max speed on record was 179 mph.
The only disadvantage that I can see to the Tom Tom is that I can't press the screen to "bookmark" a location. It requires you to enter it as an address, crossroads, etc. I want to be able to say "Bob's House", for example. |

If anyone has managed to get this updates here's the step-by-step installation website.

I downloaded it and I am glad I didn't shell out the money for it. The updates I hoped were on there, werent. You mean new roads, ramps or subdivisions built in your area or the areas you travel? Garmin gets their maps from NavTeq which really take their time in updating the maps. A lot have been disapointed by these updates but still wanted the latest. |

Don't know what kind of a unit you have, I have the Zumo 550 and I have Topo 2008 loaded on the SD card, it works with no problems. |

Well... it took two days of bit torrent downloading... then a whole fucking afternoon trying to figure out how to get it from my computer to my GPS units. Finally, I realized I needed to put the map on an SD card. Once the SD card was inserted into the GPS, the maps loaded... no problem. I'm a total nube at this stuff... and it literally took me all damn day to figure it out... Trying to explain it to someone just ain't possible.

Some info in case y'all are wondering.... How Garmin Updates Work |
| I just registered on the Garmin website and typed in the serial and everything. It's a good thing I read this thread, it said I had 18 days to update the map for free and then after that it would be available for purchase on their website. It's a 1.92 GB file...we'll see how long it takes to download. |
|
Well that didn't work at all...it did take about 2 hours total to get the stuff downloaded and on the device with their program. When I went to turn it back on it said that there is no map loaded that supports routes and that warning won't leave the screen. So, now I'm running it again to see if it will fix it. Otherwise it's time to call up Garmin I suppose.
BTW the map that it updated to was version 2010.10 |
