I decided that to day is the day!

I'm going to assemble a lower for the first time. And in the finest Arfcom tradition, I'm going to assemble both of my stripped lowers at the same time. Here are the implements:

Yes, I know. I only have one complete stock. I'm waiting for my UDE kit to come from Larue.

I have never attempted any gunsmithing work. Ever.

It's 1315. How long will I take? What say you Arfcom?

Good luck, I just noticed the stock too.

You have ten minutes a lower

Good luck! I hope you have some spare detents and springs

2hrs or so for 1 both in maybe 3 1/5 ? I've never done one either, so just guessing. Hope to build one myself in the near future.

Never done it before? I say probably an hour each.

45 minutes to put each lower together.

2 hours looking in carpet for detents.

Yupp, not as complicated as it would seem, I recently stripped my lower to install a new LPK, with some notes found here on arfcom and patience it worked out.

Take your time.

I see no bacon sammiches on your table.

For the first time(s), about an hour each. Once you get used to it, about 20mins.

- remember to back support the tangs for the trigger guard to keep from breaking them when driving the roll pin

- mask the area around the BHO, so you don't hit anything driving that roll pin

When assembling the and installing the detent spring, do it in a large zip lock bag.

What do you plan to do with those vicegrips??

I know it's really, really, really hard to wait, but a day or two of research here and elsewhere could save you much grief.

I used to use a white bed sheet. Sit on one end and pull the rest over your head.

Use a 22short case to help with installing the front take down pin.

Pivot pin detent tool, best thing since pockets on a shirt.

It beats paying shipping or waiting to put together an order worthy of shipping costs.

Or buying handfulls at gunshows and having them AWOL when needed.

I've used a clevis pin to help with the front pivot pin install.  Pick up a clevis pin at a local hardware store.  Then slide the clevis pin through the pivot holes in the receiver.  Install the spring and detent through the hole in the clevis pin and push into the reeiver with a small hex key. Then rotate the clevis pin to keep the detent in.   Then use the front pivot pin to push the clevis pin out and the front pivot pin will be installed.

Good luck

All good tips, also, I like to wipe down all springs with CLP before installation. Also, as was posted, make sure to put take on the side of the reciever when tapping in the BHO pin so as not to scratch the side of the reciever.

I've got a few builds behind me, so I've got experience on my side, but generally it takes about 15 min or so to slap one together.

Or crawling in the ground looking for the pin.

it's not that hard to get it in once you figure out the trick.  just grab it as far up the pin as you can with a pair of needle nose pliers, jam it into the hole, then insert the pin.  no sweat.

The one with the complete stock is for the use of, and once he is old enough, will become the property of, my son, HARVrider. Beyond assembling it with one of my uppers (all I own are .223) and test firing it (thus having a fully assembled rifle in case of a new AWB. And that will be completed this weekend), it will be up to him to pony up the $$$ for whatever he wants to build.

The second lower, the one waiting for the UDE kit, is mine. It's going to get the full LaRue treatment. Stealth upper (probably 18", I haven't decided yet), ACOG in LaRue mount, etc...

That's not a bad time for your first and 2 at that.  My first was about 12 hours.

My boy found the detent the next morning.
