If I pull the sparkplug out of a chain saw, plug it back into the spark plug wire and turn the ignition on and pull the start cord the spark plug should fire right?

I'm trying to trouble shoot an issue and something tells me the sparkplug not firing when outside of the block and visible to me but all systems go otherwise is not a good thing.

Or does it ground to the block or is there something else I'm missing?

Must be touching the block or other grounded part to complete the circuit.

you need to ground the threads of the spark plug to the block

Yup, the metal part of the plug has to be touching the head or block.

Ahhh.

That must be why when I troubleshoot cars I always have to bring the plug close to the engine block to arch it.

I don't know why I get intimidated by small carb engines.

I guess growing up on fuel injection and computers does that to you.
