| I have to have a SS card for my son for the Navy, should be no biggy right? Well, it is. His birth cert is not identification enough that im his dad, so Ill need shot records or something along those lines. Problem is, he lives in utah and his mother will NOT help me in anyway. So, anyone know of some other way I might be able to get a SS for my son?? |

Do you have any kind of legal custody, is your name on the Birth Cert. Son would have had a SSN assigned to him at birth. It's not hard for a parent on the Birth Cert to get the SSN. All you need is the Cert and go to the nearest Fed admin Bldg.
If you're not on the Birth Cert, not the father, have no custodial rights and pay no child support then you're trollin because this is a pretty dumb thing, or, you failed to man up to begin with and she has someone worth a damn acting as his father. |

Demand to see the regulation/rule that says that your picture ID and your son's BC (with your name on it) isn't "good enough". Get ahold of the SS Administration and find out what the procedures are for a new SS card to be issued. Call your congressman/senator. Call the JAG. It sounds like some petty bureaucrat has got a bug up their ass. |

I believe the birth certificate (as with a passport application) must be a certified record of birth, not the one from the hospital but the one from the State records, usually with a seal etc.
Social Security Number for a U.S.-Born Citizen Child (never had a number) Regardless of age, anyone physically and mentally capable may sign an Application For A Social Security Card. To apply for a Social Security number: Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and Show us documents proving your child’s: U.S. citizenship; Age; and Identity. Show us proof of your identity. Take your completed application and original documents to your local Social Security office. Anyone age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number card must appear for an interview at a Social Security office. Social Security must verify a birth record for all U.S.-born applicants who apply for an original Social Security number. An exception is made for a parent who applies for a baby’s Social Security number at the hospital when the baby is born. To verify a birth record, Social Security will contact the office that issued it. Adoption: We can assign your adopted child a number before the adoption is complete, but you may want to wait. Then, you can apply for the number using your child’s new name. If you want to claim your child for tax purposes while the adoption is still pending, contact the Internal Revenue Service for Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions. For more information, see Social Security Numbers For Children (Publication No. 05-10023). Citizenship We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship. Age You must present your child’s birth certificate if you have it or can easily obtain it. If not, we can consider other documents, such as your child’s passport to prove age. Identity Your child: We can accept only certain documents as proof of your child’s identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your child’s name, identifying information and preferably a recent photograph. We generally can accept a non-photo identity document if it has enough information to identify the child (such as the child’s name and age, date of birth or parents’ names). We prefer to see the child’s U.S. passport. If that document is not available, we may accept the child’s: Adoption decree; Doctor, clinic or hospital record; Religious record (e.g., baptismal record); Daycare center or school record; or School identification card. You: We also must see proof of your identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph. For example, as proof of identity Social Security must see your: U.S. driver’s license; State-issued nondriver identification card; or U.S. passport. If you do not have one of these specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents, including: Employee ID card; School ID card; Health insurance card (not a Medicare card); or U.S. military ID card. We may use one document for two purposes. For example, we may use your U.S. passport as proof of both citizenship and identity. However, you must provide at least two separate documents. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. We will mail your child’s card as soon as we have all of your child’s information and have verified your child's documents. Keep your child's Social Security card in a safe place. It is an important document. Do not carry it with you. |

FL, what you most likely have is a non-certified COPY of the Birth Cert, not a valid acceptable one. What you need to do is get a certified copy from city hall or wherever the original was filed. If you were a Liberal and running for President your GTG. I hope everything works out for you. |

I see your problem. They need the equiv. of a DL for him. School ID, school records of some sort, doctor records.
Call the school in Utah. Tell them your problem. Shouldn't be that hard to get records sent directly to the Social Security office re your son's case. Try the doctor if you have the name. |

Whatever you do, don't go to the office in San Francisco. ![]() Social Security Administration.
What a place. I got to come here because my Social Security Card got stolen a while ago. Social Security Administration own by our Government. Man, what a mess. i think that all of tourist should come here to see what is the real America. When I was in a line. This is what I saw. There was an old lookin' black man who has almost no teeth, about 6 foot height had incredibly smelly-dirty curly long hair with a cowboy hat, black shirt, black baggy jeans and cowboy boots turned around to the front door and said OUT LOUD, "HEY, BITCH, I'm over here! Getin here, Bitch!" a caucasian lady out side shouted back to him something. I don't want to describe how was she looks. Imagine an equivalent. The black man said loud, "YouFXXXin'CXXX, Get your Fatass in here NOW, you HEAR ME Bitch?" The lady shouted something again and tried to go threw the detector and beeped. She said, "WHATTHEFXXX?" The black man laughed at her and shouted, " She got a gun!!" Every one in the room looked at the detector, some one ducked. The lady was so angry and said, "ShuttheFXXXUPyouMUZAFXXXER, I ain't got a gun!" .............. there was a bit more things going on and two police officer came VERY SOON and they took both of them away. I was like, "WHATTHEFXXX?" and thinking at the same time, "I would love to take the whole scene in video!". I saw 3 people were taken away by police while I was in the line about 3 hours. While I was in the line, I played to see how many "NORMAL" people in here except the officers. In the room, about 60 people, 9 am. It was pretty easy to count "NORMAL' people. I counted ...6, I realized that you can tell by just lookin' around, normal people wear and act pretty NORMAL! It is very depressing place. Maybe the most depressing place in the city. I was depressing when I was in the traffic court room with MANY of Latino people were driving without driver's license and the insurance. But, People work here are incredibly PATIENT to any one who needs attention and becoming SO ANNOYED ANXIOUS and some one really gets SO angry. I would give 5 star for the people work here though, because, who wants the job? Some one gotto do the FXXXin' job. I don't mind to go back there again. Funnier than comedy. Link

Is it possible to join first then get the needed card? I mean, you can join now file paperwork later? That way if the wife keeps it up, a legal dept. or JAG can give her a call that will convince her.
Your situation, although different, sounds like my brother. He can't get a NYS driver license because of the rules enacted after 9/11. One main reason he can't get it is the "points" needed. Meaning SSC, BC, utility bill or CCs. He never had a CC or utility bill. |

This is what you need according to the SS website.
Replacement Social Security Number Card for a U.S.-born Child You can replace your child’s Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during a lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in immigration status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship. To get a replacement card for your child, you must: * Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and * Show us documents proving your child’s: o U.S. citizenship (if your child has not already established citizenship with us); and o Identity. * Show us documents proving your identity. * Take your completed application and original documents to your local Social Security office . Citizenship We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship. Identity Your child: We can accept only certain documents as proof of your child’s identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your child’s name, identifying information (age, date of birth or parent's names) and preferably a recent photograph. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see a current DHS document. Acceptable documents include: * Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport); * I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or * Work permit card from the Department of Homeland Security (I-766 or I688B). We may use one document for two purposes. For example, we may use your U.S. passport as proof of both citizenship and identity. The county of his birth will have the record. Prove your ID to them, write the check, and get a certified raised seal copy. The back-assward county in Minnesota where I was born has everything posted on the Internet. The form needs to be notarized to authenticate my ID to the notary and to witness my signature.
A passport works for the social security people too. |
