Sorry if this is a repost. The range I belong to sends out a monthly newsletter, and this was on the cover as a warning to always be cautious. Apparently the guy fired the gun with the boresighter still installed.

A friend of mine did that with an AR - and the barrel stayed intact.

Subsequent use revealed that the barrel WAS damaged, in that it could no longer shoot accurately - but there was no visible external damage, and everything still functioned mechanically.  (This was a Bushmaster M4 clone).

If the picture in this thread is legitmiate, then my friend's experience is a tribute to how well-built the AR rifle is.

I sniper placed the round into the barrel.  OR  Superman shoved his finger through it.

I believe it was due to defective barrel blanks, IIRC.

Funny, because this is a classic example of bore obstruction. I guess every barrel that opened-up like that was defective.
