Anyone familiar with these? My Uncle was a Barber in the small town near here and I always wanted one of his razors and never got one. I picked this up yesterday locally...can anyone offer up any info. Uncle Massie gave me my first haircut BTW. I have a leather strap somewhere of his along with 2 stones??? here in my gun room. Thanks in advance.

I shave with one every morning unless I am in a hurry.

What would you like to know? I can post a quick and dirty beginners guide to shaving with a straight if you like.

I am going straight razor in a few days. It is my last ditch attempt to be able to shave every day. The cartridges just KILL, even with proper prep.

If I shave every day my throat area turns into mush.

Ever heard of Tend Skin? That helps some...it's high as holy heck though locally.

I have tried all kinds of things. The Mach 3 types require pressure to shave, and my skin is irritated from the initial and then gets cut to shit the next day.

Prediction:

There will be blood.

Have 911 on speed dial.

And keep a stapler handy.

Here is a decent intro to straight razors:

Some poeple already beat me with some links. I havent clicked the links, but I'll give you a quick run down anyways.

things you need (or at least make it easier):
-Razor,
-Mug
-Shaving Soap (that fits in mug)
-Brush (Boar hair or Badger, Boar is cheaper but it takes longer to mix a good lather)
-You could skip the above three with shaving cream I guess
-Strop (Or belt like my grandfather)
-Sharpening stone

I hope I'm not forgetting anything in the list.

The shaving stone I use has a 4000 grit on one side and 8000 on the other.

If you haven't shaved with it before, I would recomend sharpening it on the stone, It needs to be SHARP. It's more dangerous, in my opinion, if it isn't sharp enough. Sharpening with the stone is the same as shaperning a knife with a stone.

First thing I do is start running hot water in the sink. While I'm waiting for the water to heat up, I usually strop 30 times (15 on each side). To strop, I lie the blade as flat is it will go, with the blade resting on the leather. pull the razor the opposite direction of the blade (the opposite direction of how you would sharpen it. if that doesn't make sense, then I'll clear get pics) When you get to one end, roll the blade over on the spine and come back.

When the water is heated up, I stop the sink from draining so the water starts to build up. Put the soap in the mug (and keep it there until it's all gone) and put a little water into the mug and then dump it out. I usually run the water until I can rest the mug at the bottom and it's submerged about half way. this keeps your soap warm.

Next thing to do is to take your brush and dip it a little in the water and then start moving it in a circular motion on the soap. Feel free to rewet it, doing "properly" takes time, but in all honesty, I don't do it "properly" most of the time and I still get a good shave. "Proper", is doing it until the whole top of the brush is white with the soap and has a little crest (or nipple ) in the middle.

When the brush has enough soap, hold the brush with the tips of your fingers at the base where the handle meets the brush. Extend your index finger a little bit to make the bristles "fan" out a little bit. Starting with your sideburns, move the brush in a circular motion towards the middle of your face.

You can skip all this with a can of shaving cream I guess, but I've never used shaving cream in a can before, so I cant comment as to how effective it is.

When you look like Santa clause, take the razor and unfold it until the razor is at a 90 degree angle from the "handle" The blade should be on the outside of the angle while the spine is facing towards the handle. So you would rotate the blade 270 degrees.

Hold the skinny part of the razor (the part closest to the handle, but not on the actual blade) with your index and your middle finger, but your thumb on the other side and your third finger (or ring finger, whatever its called) on the tail thing on the other side of the handle. (again if this doesnt make sense, I'll get some pictures for you).

Now for the fun part, keep in mind that if you are shaving the left side of your face, hold the razor with your left hand and vice versa. Pull the part of your face you are shaving tight and start to shave in a downward motion. Put the edge of the blade on your face at maybe a 30 degree angle? and go for it.

I can take some pictures and pull up a couple youtube videos if that isnt totally clear. When I started with a straight (2 years ago) I only did my sides and did the mustached and the chin with a disposable bic until I got used to it. Butterfly bandages are helpful to have around although I never needed to use it (though I did get a few nasty cuts)

In fact, I'll post this and then go get some good youtube videos.

ETA:

Stropping

Shaving

Long, but very useful information on honing (sharpening)

When he shaves the side of his face, he reaches around and pulls up with the other hand, I started pulling down instead about 3 months into it, because it's more comftorable and easier and I havent cut myself yet.

Well, I'm going to get all my stuff together (along with a spare pint of blood) this week and try this next weekend. I don't want to go to work looking like I got into a fight with Freddy Krueger and lost.

I have the mug, brush, strop, razor, and stones for sharpening. I'll find some soap locally along with butterfly bandages.

I have to check out all the links too. I only have one problem thus far that I can tell, I'll do well shaving with the right hand, left hand shaving is where I'm gonna F___K UP!

Thanks all! I'll post when I do this unless I run out of blood!
